the boys earned a heifer last year by watering and feeding the bull all winter. well, that heifer calved today. I was busy baling hay, and cutting beans. this morning the wife and I went out and checked cows....I told her that heifer was close. we argued. I lost. but this afternoon, there she stood with a new calf, and nearly cleaned out!!!

so the boys have doubled their cow herd!

makes me feel good knowing they are EARNING thier way in life. imagine they will be asking me to move off before long

And why not? Sounds like they're ready to take on the world jigs! My 4yr old started playschool last week, and today he told me he could drive the new ATV and bring some stragglers up on his own. Told me to stay out of his seat - the one behind the wheel.

The little ones on this place got their first heifers from my parents for helping feed bottle calves all winter. Keep in mind at times there is 14 or so to feed. The little cowgirls charlaios cow calved this year and she has a nice steer calf to sell. The cowboys herford heifer will calve this spring. She is artifically insiminated. I didn't think my dad would AI her but he said if she came in she would get what all the other black heifers were getting. The difference being the other heifers just went down the chute and the herford had to be pushed cause she's so tame.

we had a "business meeting" today.

both boys were to share the heifer. and both bought a bred sow together. well, at the meeting it was decided the younger boy would take 100% of the pork operation and give up the heifer to the older boy.....

then this evening, when time to feed the pig, the younger boy said it was the brothers turn.....then realized ALL the pig chores were his now!

he is gonna love it when we casterate, and I make him cut the pigs!

Aw, don'tcha just love seeing the kids do well with their livestock undertakings?

Al's cow, Blondie, has given him a heifer and 2 bull calves now.......should give him another next spring. The heifer, Tillie, should also calve in the spring. Not sure if his this year heifer was bred or not......will have to wait and see.

The gilt he kept from his show pigs, was bred about 3 weeks ago, so should farrow in 3 months and 3 days.......or so they say the "average" is.......that should make it about Jan. 19 when the little piglets arrive. Should be just about right for making weight for our fair.
