Im just wondering if everybody is thinking "argueing" about the same thing?
RR what is it exactly that your shielding your children from? How old are your children?
Example my son is 5yo. My wife with the help of a book tried to explain Remembrance<Memorial> Day to him. She did this without asking me and it really was more than he could comprehend. I tried really hard to explain it but really this should have been done at an older age.
Are we talking about Sex offenders? My five year old is street proofed as much as possible for his age but the older he gets the more he will be street proofed.
Are we talking about older kids?
You know I dont think you can really force a kid to do anything.Well you can but eventually if you over do it and he gets older he will rebel. I know Jehova witnesses that drag their kids to church all the time. A lot of those kids as soon as they are old enough to get on there own quit the church first thing.
I think young kids are looking for role models but if you push them to hard they will rebel.
My 5 yo loves trucks, guns, cows and horses. This suites me but im not going to push him into anything. Actually for him to have access to my horses, guns and truck is a privilage that he has to earn.
When he gets old enough to be on his own I can darn sure promise you that he will know what hard work is all about. I promise you I will be the toughest boss he will ever have in his whole life. Thirty years from now when he is doing a crappy job and feels like quiting he will think back about what an @$$hole I was to work for and then he will think that his current job is easy and it wont seem so bad.
Kids are all different. However basically I try to make my idea there idea. I reward good behavior, make the right decisions easy and the wrong decisions hard. The bad behavior costs them privilages and everything is a priviledge around here. Even feeding my horses is a priviledge that he has to earn. Haha I will let you know ten years from now how it all works out.
But I know kids that where pushed hard into hockey or horses and all that happened was they ended up hating the sport because of it. How many farm kids do you know that left for the city the first chance they got because their parents pushed them so hard to be a farmer? I know of lots.
As far as politics or morals go im the opposite of what my baby booming liberal parents were. Actually im the opposite of them in just about every way possible. To this day if I have a moral decision to make and if im not sure what to do I think to myself what would my Mother do. Then I do the opposite. You know this will probable surprise a lot of you but I actually came from a wealthy family. But I dont worship money like they do. It would be nice to have money but im not going to whore my principles for it. I guess the point that im trying to make is that sometimes bad people come from good families and some good people come from bad families. I didnt like the role models that I had in my family when I was a kid so I adopted role models that were not family.
I certainly dont believe in being my childrens best friend. Im not going to smoke dope with them to teach them what its all about or anything flakey like that. But im going to do my best to educate my kids as they get older about the way the world is. The way most people will try to cheat, steal, take advantage, manipulate and basically use you if you give them half a chance. Haha I will also try not to get them as cynical as I am. But the main thing that im going to try to teach them is to think for themselves. I dont care how misserable I have to be to teach them this.
Love many, trust few and always paddle your own canoe. Sounds corny but there is wisdom in that if you really think about it.
If all else fails I will dump my son off in a logging or oil rig camp back in the bush and tell him to make his own way or starve. Im not joking either. I love my kids to much to make pets out of them.
