As you may have gathered from previous writings, I am a pretty good Republican and have voted a straight Republican ticket all my life with only one exeption. A good neighbor friend used to run on the Democratic ticket and was a fine County Commissioner, so I did always vote for him.

Even though I am Republican from the top of my balding head to the tips of my Wilson boots, one of my greatest pet peeves in recent years has been telemarketers, and especially Republican telemarketers. Some Republican cause is always seeking donations, and it gripes me to the bone. I think these "Republican telemarketers" might even be hired by the Democrat party to thoroughly tick off Republican constituents. I have ceased to be nice to these guys, and just hang up on them.

Lately I have heard that telemarketers will soon have access to cell phone numbers, and have been dreading that day. I carry a pocket phone, and we get quite a bit of good out of them while doing ranch work. Saddletramp carries a phone, and Peach Blossom usually does (when she remembers it  ). I have not been very free giving out this number because it can be a real nuisance to get a gabby call while trying to get ranchwork done. Another problem is that we never have a good connection on these cell phones. It is a rare call that Saddletramp and I can hear each other without the phone connection failing, and one of us having to re-dial.

Yesterday, my pocket phone vibrated and I answered it. On the other end came, "Hello, is this Mr. Soapweed?" "Yes," I said and the phone connection failed momentarily, "can you hear me?" "Yes," he said, "this is XXXXX running for Senate on the Republican ticket." I hung up, instantly mad. I thought to myself, those sorry telemarketers have finally figured out my cell number and it is really going to screw up ranching.

Still seething a few minutes later, I was walking out in the horrendous wind, just ready to get in the pickup, when my phone buzzed again. "Hello, this is XXXXX running for senate."

I blew up and read him the riot act, "By gosh, how did you sorry suckers get my pocket phone number. I'm trying to be a rancher, and sure don't need all these telemarketing calls interrupting my work. I'm a lifelong Republican, but am so sick of you guys calling all the time that I am about ready to vote Democrat. Get a life." I let him have it with both barrels.

He said, "Well, I'm XXXXXX running for Senate in Nebraska, and plan to be at the Bull Bash in Valentine. Are you going to be there?"

I retaliated, "Planning to, unless you guys make me so mad I decide not to go."

Then I got to thinking, maybe this guy is for real and he could be alright. I asked, "Where did you get my number?"

He said, "Well, I called your sister earlier today and talked to your dad this morning. He gave me your pocket number, and said that is the only way I'd be able to catch you since you were vaccinating cows."

I ate a little crow, and said I was sorry, and told him I'd try to look him up at the Bull Bash to apologize in person.  :???: :?    :)

This morning, I finally put two and two together, and realized that this gentleman at one time dated a friend of my sister. He and his girlfriend came up and took in our branding quite a few years ago. The poor guy sure got an earful before he got his words in edgewise.

It's probably best if we don't go there. What would be great stress relief for you might just put me over the top. It's stressful enough trying to stay one step ahead of all the Democrats on this board.

Don't sweat the small stuff and don't pet the sweaty stuff.

(Did I say that right?)

well, reader, it looks like someone sees some good in you if they think you are a republican.

I wonder how they sort out for those calls....take every number in the area, and cross check it. if they are not getting union papers or a welfare check then they must be republican....

if they are not getting union papers
I am a very good republican thank you I shaw the importance of joining the NEA. I DO NOT agree with their political standing by any means. But with a 1 million insurance policy for being sued by parents I could not pass that up. Most times if admin or parents find out your a member of the "teachers union" they leave you alone.

Most canidates get the phone list from the Booard of elections. You would be amazed at how you can get it sorted.

I try not to fund organizations that I DO NOT agree with. Guess you're different. It's my opinon that the NEA is the most dangerous union in this country. If you continue to remain a member, hopefully you can achieve a leadership position. They certainly could use the influence of a 'very good republican'. :D

At the Bull Bash in Valentine yesterday, I saw an attractive lady wearing a "David Kramer for Senator" sticker on her coat. I asked her where she got it, and she said that her husband was Mr. Kramer. After telling her who I was, she laughed and said, "Stay put, my husband sure wants to meet you." In a few minutes, the two of them returned and we got re-acquainted in friendly fashion.

Back in 1996, David Kramer had attended our branding. I remember being impressed with him at that time, and still am. He is an intelligent and kind person, with the best interests of our state and country at heart. I will be proud to vote for him, and have promised to do just that.

Here is his webpage for those of you that are interested: www.kramerforsenate.com.

Congratulation, stevie. On the brevity of your post. Now, so as not to be rude and ignore your question:

So X, if I run for state rep, can I count on your support, too?

The answer is an emphatic, "NO!!!"

A myriad of reasons, the most important being that I would never meet residency requirements to support you. You see, there are only two options in the unlikely event that a sane person were to be caught living(?) in Massachussetts:

1. Moving
2. Suicide

Moving would be my preference. But if it were going to take too long to get packed...

With that said, it is possible that even you would be an improvement over some of the elected officials that hail from your northeastern, liberal, socialist outpost. For your choice of a cozy little slot that requires you to meet no qualifications of a mental or ethical nature, I highly recommend that you skip the statehouse and set your sights on one of those US Senate seats. Best of luck. :D
