Australia Beef Exports Hit Record S Korea Demand Strong
CANBERRA (Dow Jones)--Australian beef exports in November reached a record total for any month of 94,693 bone-free metric tons, up 4.4% from October and up 17% from November 2005, driven by strong demand from North Asia, marketing concern Meat & Livestock Australia Ltd. reported Friday.
“The strong increase in total exports was driven predominantly by high supplies and the ongoing strength of the Japanese and Korean markets, as well as consistent exports to the U.S.,“ MLA reported in a statement.
Exports to South Korea reached a record 16,442 tons in November, up 16% on month and up 65% on year, in part reflecting a continued absence of U.S. beef from the market and a certainty that commercial volumes of U.S. product won’t be available this year, it said.
Total exports to South Korea in the first 11 months of 2006 of 132,684 tons were up 37% on year. Seasonal peak demand and low volumes of imports from the U.S. led to the second-highest volume shipped to Japan on record, totaling 41,398 tons in November, up 12% on month and up 13% on year, according to data issued by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, which doesn’t comment on the figures.
Shipments in November took total beef exports in the first 11 months of 2006 to 874,739 tons, up 4.2% from the year-earlier period, the data show. Exports to Japan in the first 11 months fell 0.6% on year to 370,756 tons.
Australia is the world’s second-biggest beef exporter after Brazil, with the value of exports in fiscal 2005-06 around A$4.5 billion. Australian exports have grown sharply since late 2003, after a case of mad cow disease was discovered in the U.S., prompting Japan and South Korea to ban imports and turn to Australia to help fill the supply gap.
Both Japan and South Korea lifted the bans in recent months, but trade with the U.S. is building slowly. The official figures show exports to the U.S., the second-biggest overseas market, of 26,312 tons in November were down 6.6% on month but up 2.0% on year.
Exports to the U.S. in the first 11 months of 2006 of 275,559 tons were down 7.4% on year. Among second-tier markets, beef exports in the first 11 months to Taiwan totaled 25,912 tons, down 5.6% on year, while exports to Indonesia rose 32% to 11,008 tons.
Exports to the Commonwealth of Independent States soared to 12,441 tons in the latest 11-month period from 453 tons previously, on supply disruptions from South America.
