La cochinera: A glorified hog pen

Finally started releasing my hogs into their new home over the weekend. It´s a bit over 17 hectars in size (something like 40 acres) of rough terrain but does also have areas planted with corn and sorghum.

So far the girls seem happy, doing what hogs do best. I´ll soon release the new man in their lives.

Here´s a view from the west. The thick green cover is where the hogs now live.

A shot of the corn I planted.

This is a pic of the grounding system we used for the electric fence. It´s about 4 feet deep with a heavy plastic in the bottom, several sacks of urea, and a PVC pipe through which we can add water to keep the area moist.

I spotted this guy crossing the road from my bermuda into the cochinera. It´s a boa constrictor about 4 feet long. I´ve seen them up to 9 feet; suspect I might lose a few of my smaller hogs to these guys.

A couple of the ladies checking out the fence.

So many new things to see, smell, and eat. Note the water to the left. This laguna snakes through the place.

One of my favorites. She never loses weight.

thanks for the pictures Whitewing. How big do your hogs get before you market them, and what are they worth then? RBT

Right now I´m selling only the castrated males. Normal marketing of these hogs would be when they reach 80 - 100 kilos. However, hogs here are in strong demand during the Christmas holiday season with all sizes easily sold into the market. This year they´ll bring $1.50 per kilo (live), and up depending on size.

...lolol...Here in Texas we build fences to keep pigs out!!...When we shoot em we just let em lay and feed the buzzards...They are sooo destructive...We plowed a pasture to plant winter grazing...and the Son of a Guns re-plowed it!!...

I'm Guilty!
60 years ago we had to drive 1 to 200 miles to hunt pigs.
Some of my friends and I use to go to the Auctions and buy anything that looked like wild Hogs - we brought them home and turned them loose.
Big Mistake!
Now they are everywhere.

Spent a good bit of time with the hogs these past few days and am pleased to report that the ladies are as happy as.......well, as hogs in slop. :)

One thing I did note, it´s amazing how fast they become "wild".
