THEY WORK... and when you are doing it YOURSELF..and you are not a cabinet maker yourself, you can make them fit the way you want. I could not find any Cabinet maker that could beat the cost and get what I wanted. I was using my space as an office/family room combination and like you katrina I needed more storage to organize my clutter. It is always fun to try to remodel lmao....NOT. I hated remodeling anything...to many if this and if that...I could do this if . I would much prefer to go Readers way..but, here we didnt have anyone like that and not sure we do now, although with the lake area growing we might. One day guess I will be remodeling again, and can dictate what I want, instead of doing it myself.

Good Luck Katrina....lol you got lots of advice on here, might change your mind after all this. LOL

Custom don't always mean "hired out" job for someone else to do. If they have the minimal tools for working with wood, and basic wood skills, cabinets are not hard to build. Remodeling is fun. Most of the time. unless it involves a 1 bath home...and it's the bathroom that's gettin the remodel........been there done that.

Go shop around, see what ya like.....you might be surprized at what you can do yourself. For a fraction of the cost.

Possibly Lowe's and if you are lucky the good help will be working and able to help you come up with a plan better then you could have on your own!

Our daughter and fam. are arriving tomorrow and she knows so much
about these things- really has The Eye. The took an old house and redid most of it fairly inexpensively. I'll ask her.
Looks like you have so much good space to fool around with, it ought to be a fun project, Katrina.

Katrina,
Instead of Lowe's or Home Depot, if you have a smaller Lumber yard or building center near you. Go there and ask the manager to see the scratch and dent items, and items that were maybe ordered and came in the wrong finish. When we built our house, that's how we got alot of things. For example, the front door. Those cut glass oval doors at the time were runnin around $800 for just the door. I got the insert window for $50 because it had one tiny flaw in it, then went to their scratch and dent section, and got another door, that had two small cut glass windows in it. We cut that one down the middle and used them for sidelights. Paid $25 for that door. All of our kitchen cabinets were built out of 1x12s that had been out in the weather. Not bad boards, just had a lil gray from a rain or two. It was a huge bundle of boards......for $50 so my cabinets only cost us what the boards cost. We did them ourselves.
You might even check at lowes or home depot, I've never asked but I bet they have a discount section too.

Our daughter had some suggestions:

They got KraftMade cabinetry from Home Depot which has held up well despite their kids using it at times like a junglegym.

Glass doors only on top if you're trying to hide clutter. Top part could be done to help display things especially top shelves that you'd have to climb up to reach. But in general she likes to close off the clutter with solid doors. She thought the board would help tie things together as you described it.

She'd paint the top trim at the ceiling to go with the walls so it doesn't draw the eye. And...you won't want this suggestion ...she'd paint much of the wood in the room to blend with the walls, even the door and trim, says it would help sink it into the surroundings. Also suggested raising the curtain topper higher on the wall so it doesn't obscure the view out the window if you like the view. Maybe go for a lighter curtain that blends with the walls.
She likes getting the paint chips that show which four colors blend well together, then use those for a room. Martha Stewart and some other paint companies have them. Takes the guess work out of choosing paint. In her kitchen there was an old, bulky, high hutch when they bought the house. It has two doors on the top with glass. She painted it to blend with the room and painted the inside of the top a slightly different shade. Really looks pretty with the dishes in it and doesn't seem overly large now due to the paint job. I was never eager to paint furniture since it used to get nicked up but perhaps paint is tougher these days. Seems to work for her.
