Las Vegas Mayor Demands Apology From Obama
Sin City's mayor wants president to apologize for saying companies shouldn't visit Las Vegas on the taxpayer's dime.

LAS VEGAS -- Sin City's mayor wants President Obama to apologize for saying companies shouldn't visit Las Vegas on the taxpayer's dime.

Oscar Goodman spoke after a regular scheduled meeting with tourism officials where he expressed concern that federal lawmakers might be discouraging travel to the city.

"What's a better place, as I say, than for them to come here," Goodman told KLAS-TV. "And to change their mind and to go someplace else and to cancel -- and at the suggestion of the president of the United States -- that's outrageous."

Obama made the remarks Monday during a town hall meeting in Elkhart, Ind., where the president traveled to muster public support for economic stimulus legislation.

"You can't get corporate jets, you can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer's dime," Obama said.

A White House spokesman said it was looking into the mayor's comments and did not have immediate comment.

Goodman said Obama's remarks at the town hall meeting were unwarranted.

"That's outrageous, and he owes us an apology," he said. "He owes us a retraction."

Las Vegas tourism officials worry that increased scrutiny on business travel will discourage meetings and conventions -- business that would be crucial for the city already suffering economically. The number of visitors to Las Vegas was down 4.4 percent in 2008 compared with a year earlier, and visits in December alone declined nearly 11 percent.

Late Monday, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said it had moved a three-day conference from the Las Vegas Strip to San Francisco amid what the bank called a broad review of its activities. Goldman Sachs has accepted $10 billion in federal bailout funds.

Last week, Wells Fargo & Co., which received a $25 billion infusion, canceled a planned employee recognition conference in Las Vegas after an AP story reported on the trip and the bank received criticism from Capitol Hill that it was misusing the funds.

I have to give Obama an ATTA-BOY...Fatcat Bank and Financial CEO's shouldn't be getting taxpayer dollars in bailouts and then taking junkets and going partying in Vegas or Palm Springs or anywhere else....

And these same Bankers are really catching HELL about these trips, new foreign made jetliners, huge salaries, bonuses, and golden parachutes- after they ran their companies into Bankruptcy and had to take taxpayer money- from Congress today in the hearings......ABOUT TIME !!!!

I was thinking about this. Are they getting taxpayer money in lieu of money, from those not willing/able to meet their financial obligations?

If those people had not over-extended themselves, and payed the banks back, would the taxpayers have to bail them out?

Zer0 didn't HAVE to name a city in his statement.
He could have simply said that expensive trips for those that have taken bailout money should be avoided. "Wherever they may be".

But no, he's got to shoot off his mouth and piss somebody off every time he opens it.

I'd be pizzed too if I were mayor of Las Vegas, Zer0's statement, as it was , was totally uncalled for.

You've elected yourself a real winner there.

Wouldn't you think that at least one of these banks owns or has lent money to hotels etc in Vegas? They more than likely could have had a fairly inexpensive meeting place compared to the more acceptable new venue! :? :?

What is it with these wimps no a days.Demanding an apology...That may be the weakest thing anyone can do is demand an apology..

LAS VEGAS -- Sin City's mayor wants President Obama to apologize for saying companies shouldn't visit Las Vegas on the taxpayer's dime.

How are earth is this stament outragous?.....They should not be using tax payers money to visit Las Vegas.....I am surprised you conservative think its ok to do so.....Why does it matter if Vegas was singled out,if you think it was picking on Vegas, give your heads a shake....It was a direct shot at all companies borrowing or taking tax payers dollars...I applaud the man for not getting caught up in all the political rederic and just says it like it is.....If Vegas's feelings are hurt to bad ....

If you are hosting a meeting or conference whining about the location is picking fly stuff out of pepper. The kind of micro managing you would not expect from your CEO.

I think las vegas is the number one place companies flock to .for confrences and such.....To use them as an example is very ok....In other words no place is acceptable......video confrence from your head office if it involves tax payer money.plain and simple...If your hosting on your own dollar then pick where ever you want......but if you get tax payer help, stay home ..

I suppose next the NFL and the Super Bowl folks will be whining and crying too- or the foreign company that built the corporate jet they had ordered- and they wanted to use US taxpayers dollars to buy....

personnally I could care where Obama pointed out.. Obama is often caught making spoken blunders that heads of state can not make.. but any reasonable person could see the intent of his comment... that business should avoid Las Vagas.. as it could be embarassing.. but that will hurt Las Vegas.. alot..

BTW the mayor is a democrat.. so yes more then likely he is a wimp.. and his comment was a bit whiney... smart but whiney..

by his demanding an apology he has been able to point out via the media that Las Vegas has been an economical choice as a business conferance destination...

so by standing up to Obama's comment the Mayor has recieved "free" marketing... all by being a whiner..

Maybe so but as long as they are given tax payers money to fund their business..I think they should work on ways to better spend that money so that one day they can again trive and put back what they took....After doing that then they can enjoy what ever city they like as a host.....

I agree for the most part with Obama in what he said. But a person in his position has to be more PC, heck the Democrats live for being Politically Correct. So the President should not single out a specific town especially one that so many people jobs depend on Tourist and business trips.

It is kind of like his wording of only buying American, he has to be more PC in his comments! Basically Democrats coined this phrase so surely he should honor it?
