Law Enforcement Treat Professor's Death As Homicide

CHADRON – The discovery of the body of Chadron State College Math Professor Steven P. Haataja is being treated as a homicide.
Dawes County Attorney Vance Haug released this morning, “Due to the unusual circumstances and the condition in which the body was found, law enforcement is treating this case with an abundance of caution, and investigating it as a homicide.”
Haug said that the Nebraska State Patrol, Dawes County Sheriff’s Office and Chadron Police are requesting and welcome citizen input and information that may be helpful.

Haataja was last seen on December 4 of 2006. His body was discovered in rural Dawes County on March 9, and an autopsy was performed in Scottsbluff the following day.
Haataja, who is from South Dakota, completed his doctorate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in August and began teaching at Chadron State this past fall.
