WASHINGTON -- Bipartisan opposition is emerging in the Senate to a plan by House lawmakers to spend $550 million for additional passenger jets for senior government officials.

The resistance to buying eight Gulfstream and Boeing planes comes as members of both chambers of Congress embark on the busiest month of the year for official overseas travel. The plan to upgrade the fleet of government jets, which was included in a broader defense-funding bill, has also sparked criticism from the Pentagon, which has said it doesn't need half of the new jets.

The Obama administration had sought $220 million to buy four passenger jets, including two that are currently being leased by the Air Force, to replace a fleet of older planes. Before leaving town for the August break, House lawmakers doubled the aircraft order to eight, at a total cost of $550 million.

Hypo if you were born after 1961 then there are planes in the fleet that are older than you are. I know this to be a fact because I have provided engineering support for the repairs at the company I retired from.

The Air Force had asked for one Gulfstream 550 jet (price tag: about $65 million) as part of an ongoing upgrade of its passenger air service.

so buying the eight luxury jets now, when deficits are at an all time high is a good sound fiscal decision?

I do not know if it is good decision or not proable not. They need to talk the talk and walk the walk. But the Air Force wanted one and the others were added. There are a lot of older planes in the fleet. I would question why the ones using the planes to take trips listed in Hypos website posting needs to go anywhere. Could be they need to stay here and settle ever thing down. They could have asked John McCain to stop the purchases and then order Airbus planes from Europe.

Excuse me HE/SHE how was I to know Hurleyjd's sex?

I read the whole post. The air force wanted one the House added the rest. Yes lots of older planes are still flying and if they are asked for by the air force they should be considered. What"s the house know about airplane maintenance ?

You are naive. :cowboy:

There is a point of no return in running older jets. Some maintenance is prescribed by the number of running hours on the jets and some maintenance is by time expired alone.

When an engine rebuild is necessary on a Gulfstream, it is flown to a rebuilder, the engine is removed and a loaner is put in it's place. (after about a week, and all the while a jet owner rep must be present)

The jet can then be flown back home, etc. while the orginal engine is rebuilt.

When the engine is ready, the jet is flown back to the rebuilder and the loaner is replaced with the original. Probably almost a month has passed by then and the bill will be upwards of a million.

Just placing a hush kit (muffler) alone on the older jets is over a 1/4 million$ per engine on a G 2.

A paint job alone will be over $200,000.00. I saw an invoice for carpet replacement and it was $85,000.00 and change.

Course, we could buy all the House Reps a big diesel pusher bus and spend a million each on them................

Is the age of an airplane that relevant?? The B-52 is even older and we ask our guys to fly in them. Same for some other military planes a well as the Boeing 707. I flew on one of those just a couple of years ago.

Yes there will come a time in the life of a plane when it will be more economical to replace. Most of the older planes have new and larger engines installed. New Avionics and such. The RC135 is old and when I left in 2002. The talk was that they would be replaced with a smlaller more efficient plane. A lot of the intellegence gathering equipment is much smaller and more powerful that it was say 30 years ago. The B52 is one of the best planes. Plans to retire them with the B1 and The B2 did not pan out. A B52 can loiter over the battlefields we have now for days at a time with the inflight refueling capibilities. But I look for a day when the Bombers will be remote controlled with no crew on board. The developed of the cruise missles that were starte under Jimmie Carter are used a lot more than saturation bomber that the B52 was designed for. Although the B52 can carry cruise missles. Some of you Air Force people can tell me if I am wrong about this. I sure could be.

I always thought hurely was a guy oopsss, sorry hurely still doesnt change what I think about you LOL

Aircraft age diffrent than cars or trucks or tanks..so yes they might need to be replaced for safety. But do they really NEED more than 1? Can they NOT take PUBLIC transportation? Why not use their OWN planes? LOL yeah they do have theiro own jets...just not as fast or big or free. And with jet fuel prices WWHHOOOOO that trip might get a second or third thought before heading out.

I wonder if they are starting to get the message.

WASHINGTON -- House leaders late Monday dropped plans to spend $550 million on Air Force passenger planes for use by senior government officials, a sum that more than doubled the Pentagon's official request and had drawn strong public criticism.

"If the Department of Defense does not want these aircraft, they will be eliminated from the bill," said Rep. John Murtha (D., Pa.), the chairman of the House panel that sought the aircraft order.

The House will seek only $220 million to purchase one Gulfstream plane and three Boeing Co. aircraft, which was the original request by Department of Defense officials.

They need the jets to fly the healthcare buerucrats around the country to audit healthcare to make sure doctors are not doing more than they are required to by law. It is right there on page 825. They are so sure it will pass they want the jets ready. Pass it on I read it on the internet.
