OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Olympia police arrested 29 people after a officers say anti-police protest turned into a riot in the downtown streets after 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.
Olympia Police Department tells KIRO 7 Eyewitness News that a group of about 35 people marched down 4th Avenue in Olympia in what participants called a “sweep the police protest.”
Officers who monitored the march said the members were dressed in black and disguised themselves with face coverings.
Protestors blocked all lanes of traffic on 4th Avenue as they moved through downtown.
Police received reports of vandalism and graffiti in the area and received additional reports that members of the group were involved in assaulting a photographer, intentionally damaging his camera.
Officers witnessed members breaking windows of a business in the area of Jefferson Street and 4th Avenue.
Shortly after 9:00 p.m. police contacted and detained 29 members of the group near State Avenue and Adams Street.
The participants were taken into custody and booked at Olympia City jail for engaging in riotous behavior.
