Leftover Grass

Granddaughter and I were checking cows yesterday- and it got me to thinking about how lucky we have been for the last few years with the moisture we've had- and the grass we had/have.

Nice to see these cows taking advantage of the leftover Crested wheat grass... This is one time of the year with the green coming up in it that they will take advantage of the old stuff while chasing the new..

Nice to see this much leftover grass for spring grazing- until the native grasses really get going.. And with the cool temps we have had- the native grasses are slow to start this year..

Calves look like they are doing pretty good...

The biggest share of the calves in this pasture were sired by Lazy Bar B Bannon 2 BY - a double bred Bannon of Wye that turned into a real calving ease bull... Water and grass- it doesn't get much better than that...

Your conditions and cattle look great. With old grass in the pastures, the new grass grows much better than if the pastures are grazed hard. Another advantage is that cows are much less apt to get grass tetany, because of getting old grass and new grass with each mouthful. If it is only new grass, tetany is considerably more likely to occur.
