This last week she's been ridin a new barrel horse. Some friends of ours, in conversation last week said they needed to sell one of theirs, cuz they were gettin a new 3 year old. We haven't brought him home yet, we are shufflin horses around and tryin to finish up buildin stalls and a fenced in area where she can practice.
so we've been takin her over to their place to ride him. He's been runnin 16's (faster than she's gone before) and he's a five year old....named of all things.....Toilet Paper......so...when she hits the "big time" You'll hear them announce....."And here comes Lil Lilly and Toilet Paper...she's on a roll!!!"
Gittin him all perdy.

Good pictures. Looks like you are raising your daughter right. How can you beat fresh air, lots of elbow room, riding horses, and killing snakes for bringing up kids in the best way?

Yes she does. She's been doin the 4H horse stuff for about 6 years now. She also competes in open barrel races, when there's somethin goin on close enuff. Her horse she's been ridin for the last 3 years is 24 years old....and just doesn't have another gear. She's ready to go faster. She's got another 5 year old that she's started on barrels, but this new horse was just too good a deal to pass up. She's a member of 4H as well as FFA. She shows her goat , photography, her horse, and usually a baked item under 4H, then her pen of three commercial heifers are shown under FFA and the FFA kids have a BBQ cook team (this year I think we're havin 2 teams) . Our fair is next month, startin June 3.......yikes!!! it's gettin close.

That is great!
Our kids compete at the state 4-h finals every year.
We use it to get away and have fun and they do a few barrel racings and playday series around here.
They show their pigs with FFA and every now and then Reva hasn't done a bake show in ages.

All we have up here are garter snakes-so my kids thought that snake was pretty cool-I remember looking at a few snake bit horses in Dr. Ismay's clinic in South Dakota-other than biting stock do they do much harm besides scaring the crap out of people.

Lil Lilly decided a couple years ago that she should enter baked items when at the premium action a plate of divinity candy (12 small squares) brought $1100.00!!!!! I really don't think thats right that the baked items bring that much, because that's more than alot of the pigs, goats, chickens, and rabbits bring. The kids that raise an animal have worked roughly 6 months with those critters, and have alot of time and money invested in them. Then someone enters a baked item and spent a couple hours in the kitchen.....you get my drift. But that's the way things work, so she decided to enter baked items as well. LOL Here if you have more than one animal that makes the premium sale (or baked item) you have to choose only 1 thing to sell. Unless you have more than one that makes grand or reserve, then you can sell more than 1.
Last year she built a horse feeder in Ag-Mech and got Reserve Grand.....so she wasn't able to sell her goat. But it brought enuff to way more than cover the expenses of raisin the goat and cost of materials to build it.
The Pen of commercial heifers is a seperate sale, so they sell no matter what you place in other areas of the fair.

Thats the way it works here too
In Comal county just north of us they do a point system which I would like to check into more
where all the kids that make the sale receive points according to their placing and then they also break everything down into categories according to the project
all the money from the sale goes into the pot and then the kids receive a check according to their points.
this could be a good thing and also it could backfire without some checks and balances in place. If you guys make it to a barrell racing down this way or the state 4-h finals let us know

Even though we have all kinda poisonous snakes around here, Copper heads, water moccasins, rattle snakes, we've never really had a problem with critters gettin bit by them. Other than our dog. LOL and he was prolly messin with it. That one she shot was a chicken snake (non poisonous) but how can ya resist lettin a kid shoot a snake? LOL
that was a big thing when I was a kid....take whatever gun you were allowed to use, whether it was a bb gun or a .22 or a 410 shot gun, and go pasture walkin and shoot snakes and lizards.
I was drivin the truck, Mr Lilly had his arm hangin out the winder and leanin kinda outta the truck....just the way he rides in my truck.....I know wierd....anyhow, this snake reared up at him as we passed it....didnt take long for him to git his self back in the winder.......was kinda funny.

State finals with the horse is what she's aimin for. This next month she'll be workin him every evenin on poles...he's never seen a pole that we know of. So she's gotta get him goin on that since you can't ride more than one horse in competition. Well you can but you can't combine points from 2 horses. So to do well in the points standings she's gotta get him decent on poles. At least make a clean run on poles.

Our kids get a check for what ever they sell at the fair auction, minus a $25 fee that goes to the Fair Association to cover costs. Last year they took a 10% commission on the Heifers, this year they've lowered that to 5%.
The only part of our Fair that works on the points system is the Home Economics division, and the Horse events. Doesn't affect what they sell at the auction, but when they give awards (buckles n stuff) they use the points they've accumulated for those awards.
