Do you folks in Tx grow any habanero peppers? My father in law grows them and they are nasty just by theirself but they sure make good crushed red pepper . I like them the best for that. They are hot though.

You want hot? Ever heard of a Thai Dragon? Holey-moley!!! Never believe anybody when they say they're not THAT hot! Few weeks back, we were visiting some friends of ours, and we got egged into trying a little piece. I've never had that much fire going on in my mouth in my life!!! Best friend made the mistake of rubbing his eye a bit, and it was a whole lot worse for him. As I was taking a drink, trying to put the fire out, I was told not to because it would just make it worse. TOO LATE!!!! We were turning red in the face, our eyes were just pouring, and we were eating tortilla chips as fast as they were filling the bowl. About an hour or so before we were back to semi-normal.

What do they look like Shelly? Are they a small pumpkin type pepper?
I looked it up Shelly. It's a chili pepper. Believe it or no, they say habanero are hotter. The oil from habanero is what they make pepper spray from. It's pretty hot , really!

You Canadians just have sensitive mouths.

No, they're long and skinny, like a string bean.

My husband asked me after, "When you heard the word dragon, did you not think hot????" Dragon, fire, hot. Makes sense now.

I looked it up Shelly. They are about the same. I bet the thai dragon has a better fresh flavor. I need to check into those. Here's the heat rating.

We've grown them in the past, but I don't like the flavor that they have when you make salsa with them. and YES THEY ARE HOT!!!!! They make a decent pepper sauce...which is just peppers in a jar with vinegar over them seal and set for about 6 weeks before you use it. But Mr Lilly is the one that uses the pepper sauce on stuff..(boiled cabbage, beans, perdy much whatever he takes a notion to sprinkle it on)
We grow some lil peppers called Chili Pequin or commonly known as "Birdeye Peppers" they are really hot..not as hot as Habanero's but plenty hot enuff. they are about the size of a pencil eraser or a lil bigger maybe, and I can add 3 or 4 to a pot of soup and it gives it a lil kick. These we use for pepper sauce too. I made picante sauce with one quart of tomatoes and 4 of them one time..and it was almost too hot to eat. :devil2: And we usually put 4 Jalapeno's in a batch of sauce...

Also a hint for you pepper growers..if you want hot peppers....don't water them much. The less water they get while growin the hotter they'll be.
