Now where are the big donations from Reid, Obama, Clinton, et al? Please note that this story is from the liberal MSNBC, not some conservative "rag", although I can sure supply you with some of those if you want.

Limbaugh letter nets $2.1 million on eBay
Proceeds from letter blasting ‘phony soldier’ comment going to vets charity

Oct. 19, 2007

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A letter from Democratic senators blasting conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh for using the phrase “phony soldiers” on his program was sold Friday on eBay for a record $2.1 million.
A private foundation made the winning bid, which eBay spokeswoman Catherine England said set a record for the most expensive item sold for charity by the online auctioneer.

Limbaugh’s comment during his radio show last month drew broad criticism from Democrats, who said he was smearing soldiers opposed to the Iraq war. Limbaugh and other conservatives responded with outrage of their own, saying Democrats were mischaracterizing comments aimed at one particular former soldier who lied about his service.

The Oct. 2 letter to Clear Channel Communications Inc. sought an apology from Limbaugh and a public repudiation from the company. It was signed by 41 senators, including Majority Leader Harry Reid and presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and Chris Dodd.
The letter from the senators called Limbaugh’s comments against “troops who oppose the war ... an outrage.”

“It is unconscionable that Mr. Limbaugh would criticize them for exercising the fundamentally American right to free speech,” the letter read.

Proceeds to be donated to charity

Limbaugh said in a Fox News interview Thursday that the letter symbolized “the greatest example” of Congress “singling out a private citizen for abuse and censorship.”

On his show Friday, Limbaugh said proceeds from the sale, and a matching $2.1 million from his own pocket, would go to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, which provides scholarships to children of Marines or federal law enforcement personnel who were killed while serving their country.

The winning bid came from the Maryland-based Eugene B. Casey Foundation, according to the group. The foundation, which lists assets of $294 million in its latest IRS filing, was established by Casey, a real estate developer, and is run primarily by his widow, Betty.

The foundation’s largest grants during its last fiscal year included $4.9 million to a Bethesda, Md., hospital, $3.5 million to the Washington Opera and $850,000 to the American Arts Network. It also gave $110,000 to the Salvation Army and $100,000 grants to a Washington public television and radio station and Salute America’s Heroes, which helps wounded soldiers. There were no reported grants to political organizations. “The Eugene B. Casey Foundation believes freedom of speech is a basic right of every citizen of this country,” the group said in a news release Friday.

In the segment where Limbaugh made the “phony soldiers” comment, he discussed Jesse Macbeth, who was sentenced to five months in prison last month for faking his military service. The Tacoma, Wash., man was kicked out of the Army after six weeks at Fort Benning, Ga., in 2003, but he later claimed to have participated in war crimes in Iraq and tried to position himself as a leader of the anti-war movement.

Limbaugh has said he was referring only to Macbeth when he discussed “phony soldiers.”

Don't you think it's awful quiet in here? Where are all those Democrat dollars to match Limbaugh's money? Where are the defenders of these Democrats, especially of the presidential candidates who signed on to this letter?

Here's another article pointing out how Dingy Harry Reid is trying to smooth over his misdeeds:

Reid letter sells for $2.1 million on eBay
Limbaugh chastises senator for attempting to 'horn in' on charity effort
October 19, 2007

A final eBay bid of $2.11 million secured a letter from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that demanded an apology from radio talk host Rush Limbaugh over his "phony soldiers" comment.

On his show today, Limbaugh announced the winning bidder was Betty Casey, a noted philanthropist and trustee of the Eugene B. Casey Foundation in Gaithersburg, Md.

It was the largest bid ever in an eBay charity auction, breaking the $800,000 mark paid for a Harley Davidson motorcycle bearing the signature of "Tonight" show host Jay Leno.

"The Eugene B. Casey Foundation believes freedom of speech is a basic right of every citizen of this country," the foundation said in a statement on the auction. "Their purchase of the smear letter was to demonstrate their belief in this right, and to support Rush Limbaugh, his views, and his continued education of us."

Meanwhile, Limbaugh chastised Reid for taking credit for the money raised by the letter during comments to colleagues today on the Senate floor posted by Breitbart.tv.

Reid is trying to "horn in" on the effort, said Limbaugh, who pointed out the Nevada Democrat has not apologized for accusing him of smearing troops who opposed the Iraq war.

"Now he has the audacity to climb aboard this, praising the effort, saying he never knew it would get this kind of money," Limbaugh said.

Directing his comments to Reid, Limbaugh said, "It wasn't your letter that raised this money. It was your abuse of power that is responsible for raising this money."

If it were any other letter by Reid, he said, "people wouldn't pay a dime for it."

"This one represents an abuse of power by a U.S. senator, who after besmirching me by name on the Senate floor, gets a hold of my syndicate partner, asking him to confer with me about something he thought improper," said Limbaugh. 'That is why your letter is historic," he continued. It's "a full fledged, undeniable, 100 percent abuse of power."

Limbaugh announced last week he would sell the original letter addressed to the head of Clear Channel Communications in order to benefit the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, a charity offering financial assistance to the children of Marines and federal law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

The No. 1-rated talk host said he wouldmatch the winning bid, and he challenged each of the 41 Democratic senators who signed the letter to match it as well.

Limbaugh said the winning bidder, Casey, has been a listener of his program since its inception.

"We cannot thank her enough for her support of this," Limbaugh said. "I am honored and proud and happy to be matching her $2,100,100."

Reid claimed Limbaugh's use of the phrase "phony soldiers" was an attack on all U.S. troops who oppose the war in Iraq. However, a transcript from Limbaugh's Sept. 26 show suggests the "phony soldiers" remark specifically addressed the case of Jesse MacBeth, an anti-war activist who claimed to have witnessed atrocities as a Purple Heart recipient in the Army Rangers. MacBeth never served in Iraq and was expelled from the military after 44 days in uniform.

The message on the letter's eBay listing said: "This historic document may well represent the first time in the history of America that this large a group of U.S. senators attempted to demonize a private citizen by lying about his views. As such, it is a priceless memento of the folly of Harry Reid and his 40 senatorial co-signers. BID NOW!"

Limbaugh, noting he serves on the board of the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, said he would bear all costs of the auction: "Every dollar of your winning bid will go to this charity, which has to date distributed over $29 million."

Clear Channel Chief Executive Officer Mark P. Mays responded to Reid's letter with a defense of Limbaugh's right to express his opinions openly on the airwaves.

Many elected officials, mostly Democrats, expressed their displeasure with talk radio following the defeat of what President Bush called his "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" legislation – a plan characterized by many talkers as "amnesty." There were a number of calls for reinstating the Fairness Doctrine – which has also been called the "Hush Rush" bill.

As WND reported, another Democratic leader, Rep. Henry Waxman of California, angrily denied a report claiming he's investigating Limbaugh and other conservative radio talk-show hosts, but the magazine which made the allegation is not issuing any retraction.

As WND reported, one radio station in Oregon decided to "hush Rush" for a day and replace Limbaugh's talk program with music after receiving some requests from local listeners.

Conrad Burns donated his scandalized Abrahmoff bribe money to the local Indian tribes to try and take the heat off too--The tribes had too much honor to take it from a hypocrite and turned it down....

Good for the indians. :)

There's no reason for any Democrat to offer money for this letter or for anyone to defend them. Rush is simply trying to change the subject from the fact that he called soldiers who disagreed about the Iraqi war "phoney." As far as I know he has never apologized. Bombast and hot air. Nothing new here from Rush.

Nice tidbit of coffee shop talk. Though it has no bearing on Rush being attacked.

As far as I know he has never apologized.
A person can not apologize for telling the truth about someone who lies on their military service. If the libs had any BALLS they would condemn these people that lie about their military service and people like Reid who defend these phonies.

.

It has everything to do with his donation -- that is a rich mans/politicians/Hollywood tactic to throw the heat off themselves and make themselves look like good folk...O'Reilly did the same thing a few months back....Kathy Lee Gifford did the same when the media jumped all over her for using sweat shop labor to make her line of clothing...

Works out great for the charities-- works out great for the donator as they can look good while working the tax/legal angles for either themselves or their organization...

It makes a vast difference. If you did something wrong and are trying to buy yourself. Or as in Rush's case he was lied about and basically called these lying people like Reid out. Big Difference.

A matter of opinion-- I've read the transcripts many times and it could be taken either way....Still doesn't change the reason Rush took the action he did...Kathy Lee denied knowledge of "sweat shops" too....

The one thing I do think-- is that Congress has a hell of a lot more important things to worry about than what some ad in a paper says about some General or what some rich talk show host that makes his money out of stirring controversy says or doesn't say about soldiers....

No it is not a matter of opinion. He was talking about a specific person.
One has to have a active imagination to come up with a false slant. I ain't buying that crap from the left or any so called unbiased persons.
It is a FLATOUT LIE ABOUT RUSH nothing more nothing less, twist it, turn it, spin it, regurgitate it, it still comes out a lie.

He called a soldier that lied about his service "phony". So how is all he has done to bring this to the forefront trying to change the subject?

The problem is that the left wanted to believe this phony soldier so bad
(Rathergate ring a bell).
They got duped(willingly I might add) and in trying to save face they thought they could nail two birds with one stone
1 Ruin Rush
2 Save face from their failures of being led by a phony soldier

Their LIE shined through, after all why would Reid try to jump on Rush's bandwagon when he found he had a dead horse. If he had anything he would have stayed on it instead of jumping on Rush's bandwagon

Reidgate is going down like Rathergate
