BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Wildlife officials say a grizzly bear that preyed on campers outside Yellowstone National Park weighed less than average, but was in an area with ample food supplies and did not appear to be starving.

Montana officials said Monday that a necropsy has been completed on the female grizzly. The results still were being analyzed.

One person was killed and two injured during separate attacks by the bear Wednesday at the Soda Butte Campground.

Female grizzlies on average weigh 300 to 400 pounds, versus 221 pounds for the attacking bear. Her three cubs also were underweight.

Grizzly expert Chris Servheen with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says the weight of the bears does not by itself explain the attacks and that the investigation was continuing.

Hummm. If a grizzly bear is supposed to weigh 400 lbs.
this one would be half that...and not starving? Odd how
these experts come up with things.

The investigation continues. What a bunch of dumbasses what are they going to do question other bears to see if this bear was having an emotional breakdown. Somone needs to kick these people right square in the ass it's a bear what else needs to be investigated. I'd waste 6 month's and endless dollars on this at the tax payers expense. I'd have shot all four of them and buried them end of story.

Government sometimes has different perspective on things...

Twenty years ago a young man was stabbed to death on the Reservation...The crime went unsolved so since he was a Native American the government offered up a $5,000 reward leading for info on who done it...

At about the same time there was a Royal bull elk shot in Yellowstone Park..The government put up a $50,000 reward for info on that... :???:

I always thought Grizzlies were bigger than that. I guess it's their reputation. Riding Mountain National Park, just north of us has black bears much bigger. They're supposed to be the biggest black bears in North America. They had one old collared bear up there that weighed around 800 pounds. They don't hunt people like this bear did though.

I was reading this story in the city newspaper, and I think the government is probably responding to comments by city people, if the comments I read are any indication. There was a lot of people blaming, and "those poor cubs", and all that you would expect. The bottom line was that this was a bad bad bear, and she was not about to change.

It's too bad, but sometimes s*&t happens.

Grizzly bears quite often are bigger than that Kato, but not as a rule.
I think they answered their own question about the grizzly's weight when they mentioned she had three cubs. I've never seen a fat sow with triplets.
