We use Ritchey tags. We use the sandwich ones that you can grind the # into, and they do not fade. They will lose as quick as any. The ones that stay in are highly ledgible. Good pictures. Looks like you have a good pup going there too. Is it a male or female?

Good pictures, Jassy, of your busy day. Looks like you have quite a few fall calving cows to give you some cute babies later on. According to the literature of calving on nice days, there is really no "work" to it, so you should have no problems at all with that bunch. Good luck. :)

I spent the day working to get windmills ready to go in the summer pastures.

I see you called Jazzy a she--probably means she is a female. I have a yearling male border collie that is real willing to work, but he has to be tied or with you or else he is in trouble. Sometimes he is with me and still causing trouble. I've been told males are higher energy than the females. If I ran that many cattle, he might get to use that energy in a productive fashion. Like a good dog and a good horse. Either is worth their weight in gold.

If ya kind of noticed...Jazzy was on a rope at the chute...since this was really her first time I let her work...I needed to have control...after she pulled my arm out of the socket a few times...she got the hang of waiting for the chute gate to open and close...she's the most aggressive dog we've ever had, and we've always had border collies...She does real good from horseback out in the open, comes back when I call...she's still pup though and gets excited and thinks the cows should move faster...but that'll come with time and she'll figure it out...I'm really happy with her...and the new horse all at the same time...(photo shows his ears..lol)

Now if I could just get her to quit digging in my flowerbeds....she'd be the perfect dog!!!!!lol

My pup followed us this evening while we were riding thru' the yearlings looking around. had to get after him a time or two when he thoughtm they ought to be moved, but did good for a pup.

About the flower bed, get some of them big flat cactus and lay them in around your flowers. Remember to rotate them every so often or they will take root tho'.

Great photo story Jassy. The cattle look great from what I can tell.

You must keep records, if you need readable tags in the cows. We bought some Z tags a few years ago that had a clear covering on them that was supposed to keep the #'s from fading. Within 2 years you could hardly read a number anymore. We went back to the stamped numbers on the Z tags. Since we do not tag any calves born to cows older than 2 years old, it was not a big issue, but once in a while you would like to remember a cow with a tag number. Almost all our cows are angus, so it does make it easier to have a tag from time to time.

This pic reminds me of when I was a young sprout like him...Dad had actually got me to do that same job, running the hot shot to get the steers in the chute quicker. And I was pretty darned good at it too! Funny too that hot shot looks familiar...

Thats one stout alley & chute system yall got there! That, along with your impressive crew, must make the day go good
And good luck with the pup, they take awhile to get where their supposed to be but once they get there they're worth their weight........
And again, neat pics......

Ya know.....cuttin tags outta cow ears was a real hassle before the lil tag cutter took found it's way into our cow box. I don't really know when it got there, we've had it a few years. But it's a whole bunch handier than tryin to use a pocket knife. Them cutters just grab and slice em and yer done!
It's also handy for cuttin hair out of the way when you can't see a tag. We have a few that have lots of hair in their ears. They got trimmed this last time thru the chute with the tag cutter tool LOL

Thanks for sharin the photos Jassy. Looks like Jazzy was a busy busy girl, doin her doggy duties. :D

I'm defintly gonna try the cactus trick...thanks for that one...I've got moth balls all over the yard...it stinks...but helps.

Ya lilly those tag cutters save alot time...I've never used em personally, but the guys wouldn't be without em..

We moved those fall cows 15 miles today to summer grazing...I didn't take the camera cause the batteries were dead from yesterday and I forgot to recharge... :x Anyway the day went really good, and Jazzy did wonderful today...I think she was still tired from yesterday and so she wasn't so adventerous today...she minded really good, and trailed like a border collie should...just back and forth keeping things moving...I think she finally realized that the cows didn't have to move fast. She sure is one tired pup tonite...and she gets the weekend off to rest up for next week. Still won't use her on cow/calf pairs yet...maybe this fall...them ole mama cows can prettty nasty. I know I'm out of shape this spring when it comes to riding that many miles in one trip... :p
