Love him or Hate him...But....

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! To anyone with kids of any age, here's some advice.

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your
Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually
have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

I'd seen this before, a long time ago. I wonder who originally wrote it?

Maybe Bill, but I don't think so. Althought, I'll just bet he came up with number 11.

I printed this off for my 16 year old stepson he moved out to live with his dad a week ago.He was pissed because his mom would'nt buy him a $5000 car and a cell phone. We have a 1984 chevy 4x4 pickup that is in really nice shape new paint oversized tires dual exaust he say's it's a piece of crap was his for free he don't want it so I'm selling it.Thing's are very peaceful now since he left.Kid has a case of the you owe me's.He also complained about spending his whole summer raking hay I figured it out he spent 7 days in a hayfield for a grand total of 30 hours oh don't get me started Totally worthless he was pissed he was raking and hit a oak tree 2nd wheel back going way to fast my rake is a patched up junker now, then he hits a neighbor's mailbox I quit having him help then he brags about what it took to get fired from hay rakeing.   My blood pressure is way down now
Thank God he's getting a FRESH START.

Denny----just goes to show that sometimes, no matter how well a kid is raised, things just go wrong!!! Sorry to hear about such a bad experience!! How very sad!! Glad to know you have some peace now, though!!! All too often, kids are indeed "you owe me" oriented!! I see kids in my daughter's senior class who are just that.....GREEDY, SELF-CENTERED!! Then there are the good kids who know that they will have to make it ON THEIR OWN in the real world...they work for everything they get..from their own car, car insurance, clothes, senior portraits, etc!! Demodriver knows danged well that college is pretty much on her own little shoulders....better be working for those scholarships, grants and student loans...we can help a little, but NO WAY can we afford for med school!!! Amazingly, she does not have a problem with that!!

It's nice to know there are still some good kids out there. Give her a hug from her Uncle, Sir Jinglebobby.

Denny, sorry about what happened in your household.
It's never easy, but when you get rid of the one thats aggravating,
things certainly settle down. I dont' know why some kids get
"the world owes me a living" attitude, but it's a sorry one.

ranchwife, good for Gus!! She's on the right track.

And I don't care what it is, IT MEANS MORE IF THEY EARNED IT.
When something is given to you, it just doesn't mean as much.

When we had to leave all behind in Zimbabwe, even our personal savings were 'frozen' by the government, our daughter first served five years in the British army to get on her feet. She then held down two jobs to put herself through university. She qualified as a nurse last month, and starts in surgery in two weeks time. There are times when you realise it was worthwhile after all!

YOU were in that mess in Zimbabwe? They took all the land back from the whites, huh?

I have read some of the horror stories. My hat's off to you!

I did not know if it was a real speech that Bill Gates made or not..but it sure hits HOME!!

Well my sons both have to work to get anything, it isnt just given to them. I do not have it to give, and their father when he left only thought of himself only. School is much more appreciated when you are paying for it, believe meee...even though I get a little help, it does not pay everything. You are right on these kids that just assume they are OWED! I see way to many of them and especially sitting in class with me. They could care less on passing , as I sit there struggling because I do not have the time to study as much as they do, when I work when I am not in class...they do not study at all just say oh well I will take it again.

Wow Andybob, you really know how to make us sit up and think...hats off to you.
