LSU system in bad shape.

As you all know, the fiscal situation of the state is poor and the Legislature and administration have
challenged us to design a plan that will permit continued operations in the 2011‐12 fiscal year when the
state anticipates that higher education will need to absorb almost $300 million in state funding
reductions as Federal stimulus support ends. Coming as it will after the previous sequence of state
funding reductions to higher education (detailed in the attached chart), these anticipated reductions for
2011‐12 will transform public higher education in the state. The LSU system provides a wide range of
educational, research, and service activities. Our institutions deliver university‐related services from
community college through four‐year programs, graduate and professional programs in all areas
including the health sciences, research enterprises, and agricultural research and extension. The
anticipated reduction in state revenue will surely reduce Louisiana’s prosperity and competitiveness.

[/quote]The first level of the analysis might focus on those activities or units not directly related to the core
priorities of the institution. For many of our institutions, teaching and research are the core priorities
that define the university’s purpose. The first level of reductions here might include such things as
museums, galleries, sports activities, community service, public relations, and similar valuable functions
that nonetheless do not directly sustain teaching and research. In this first level of reductions, a campus
may choose to eliminate all state funding from such activities in order to preserve as much teaching and
research as possible. It is likely that some of these first level programs can continue, perhaps at a lower
level of activity, using funding from other sources, but the campus would need to eliminate state
funding within this first level.
Things don't look good for any college in Louisiana. :???:

The Feds spend over $2 Billion/year for education of illegal alliens. Maybe they could cut that back for a bit, so children of taxpaying citizens could continue to be educated?

But a "comprehensive partnership" to deepen relations between the two countries is steaming ahead, one that has as a critical tenet the expansion of higher-education ties. At the recent G-20 summit meeting in Toronto, Mr. Obama announced that the United States would spend $165-million over the next five years on programs to help strengthen higher education in Indonesia through educational exchanges and university partnerships. The two countries will also hold a higher-education summit next summer.
