Montana now has what it needs-- an honorable Republican and a powerful Democrat both of which know what the US consumer/constituents want...

Rehberg, Baucus work on labeling
By Gazette News Services

HELENA - Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., said he is introducing legislation to speed up implementation of country-of-origin labeling of meat, while Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., said he expects to be named chairman of the Senate subcommittee with jurisdiction over the issue.

Rehberg's legislation would move the deadline for implementation of mandatory country-of-origin labeling, or COOL, from Sept. 30, 2008, to Sept. 30, 2007.
"Special interest groups have been blocking COOL for too long," Rehberg said in a statement. "Montana consumers deserve the right to know where their meat products are coming from and we need to let them know this as soon as possible."

Oldtimer,

Does this mean the people of Montana will know that they are eating Montana goat?

It will mean that the consumers of the entire US will know its not mystery meat from Mexico or from countries that have BSE making the headlines monthly...The decision can be left to them.......

OT- And what happens if the consumers prefer Canadian beef?

Whats that? They've never seen it before...

If they prefer it- so be it-- but at least they have the knowledge of where it came from and the truth that it isn't of US origin......Thats the way it should be....Canada shouldn't have to rely on the US reputation...

You cant seriously tell me that. There used to be some people from Montana and North Dakota( relatives of people up here) that came up to the local plant and bought beef from them. They said they liked the barley fed over the corn fed.

Most of what is finished out around here locally is finished on barley-- but the big feedlots here only keep them until they are about 850-950 lbs then send them to their lots in Nebraska and Kansas to finish them...
