According to the district, 1,769 teachers out of 2,655 took unpaid time off during the four days. Madison Teachers Inc. Executive Director John Matthews acknowledged at the time that the union had encouraged members to call in sick to attend protests at the Capitol.
The district said Friday that 84 teachers submitted fraudulent sick notes from doctors who were handing them out at the Capitol. Of those, 46 teachers rescinded their notes and received the same docked pay and "letter of expectation" as others who were absent without a valid excuse.
The 38 teachers who did not rescind their notes by April 15 received suspension letters, although their suspensions were considered already served based on the time off.
