Maine takes step toward approving gay marriage

BOSTON (Reuters) – The lower house of the Maine state legislature passed a bill on Tuesday that takes the northeasternmost U.S. state a step closer to being the fifth in the nation to allow same-sex marriage.

Maine's Democratic-controlled House of Representatives voted 89 to 57 to enact the proposal.

The bill now returns to the state Senate, which has previously approved it. If it passes there it will be brought to the governor for his signature.

Governor John Baldacci once opposed gay marriage but in April said he is keeping an open mind on the issue.

"Marriage is not just a bundle of rights, but is dignity and respect; it is full and equal citizenship; it represents a future of hope for gay and lesbian youth," said Lee Swislow, executive director of Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, which has been lobbying for approval of same-sex marriage across the New England region. "We are hopeful that Governor Baldacci is hearing this, too."

Opponents of the bill in the rural state of 1.3 million people did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment.

Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont in the Northeast and

Iowa in the Midwest have already legalized gay marriage, and New Hampshire's state senate last month approved a gay marriage bill.

Were New Hampshire and Maine to pass laws allowing gay marriage, Rhode Island, the nation's smallest state, would be the only New England state not to allow it.

D.C. might get a chance to involve themselves with the issue too....

DC gay marriage vote could entangle Congress
By BRIAN WESTLEY – 4 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — The city council in the nation's capital voted Tuesday to recognize same-sex marriages from states that approve them, a step that could propel the emotional issue into Congress and draw Democrats into a culture-wars battle with each other.

President Barack Obama and Democratic leaders responded to the 12-1 vote by the District of Columbia Council with near silence — hoping to avoid aggravating Democratic factions already at odds over that issue and more.

Republicans, usually willing to exploit differences between Democrats, also barely reacted to the council's gay-marriage decision. GOP leaders and their aides, asked whether anyone will try to use the decision as a wedge issue, said they were preoccupied by matters such as the economic downturn and swine flu.

But they have time.

The city council vote is considered the first step toward eventually allowing gay marriages to be performed in Washington. Congress, which has final say over the city's laws, has 30 days to review the bill, assuming Democratic Mayor Adrian Fenty, a supporter, signs it.

If Congress takes no action, the bill will become law automatically

The Fed still won't recognize D.C. Gay marriages with the same tax advantages as opposite sex couples.

It's against Fed law.

Like I said- screw around long enough without giving equal rights to all- depending not on race, creed, religion, or sexual preference-- and the courts will do it for you....And we/many don't always like the way the courts do it- as was proven out in the civil rights movement of the 50's-60's-70's...Many times the reaction is overreaction....

You know aplus Mike has been the big poster of gay issues and animal sex so while you insinuate something about me maybe you should look also at one of the good ole boys you seem to enjoy.

If you think insinuating I'm gay is such a large slam it's not. I don't care what you or most on here think and I know what turns me on and what doesn't and it's none of you little perverts business.

Maine still has the ability for the voters to have a citizen's inititiative this fall and throw this out. Back when I was in high school we didn't allow a law to pass that would have given gays minority protection status. The voters voted it down. Who knows how it will swing this time with all this PC/facist crap being shoved down our throat.
