POLITICO poll: Stay out of Ukraine, Middle East

By ALEXANDER BURNS | 7/21/14 5:03 AM EDT Updated: 7/21/14 10:04 AM EDT
Amid deepening violence across Eastern Europe and the Middle East, Americans are recoiling from direct engagement overseas and oppose U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Ukraine by large margins, according to a POLITICO poll of 2014 battleground voters.

The survey provides a unique look at the foreign policy attitudes of voters who will decide the most competitive Senate and House races this fall. It shows an intensely skeptical view of American military intervention:

Asked whether the U.S should do more to counter Russian aggression in Ukraine, just 17 percent answered in the affirmative. Thirty-one percent said the current policy is correct and 34 percent said the U.S. should be less involved. The poll was completed before the downing last week of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, the civilian airliner that was apparently attacked over eastern Ukraine.

More than three-quarters of likely voters say they support plans to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2016. Only 23 percent oppose the plan.

Forty-four percent of likely voters favor less involvement in Iraq’s civil war, versus 19 percent who favor more involvement and 23 percent who say the current level of involvement is appropriate.

A 51 percent majority said the situation in Iraq affects U.S. national security “a little” or “not at all.” Forty-two percent said it affects U.S. national security “a lot.”

Likely voters prefer less involvement in Syria’s civil war over more involvement, 42 percent to 15 percent
. Twenty-six percent of likely voters support the current, limited level of involvement.

On the issue of foreign policy specifically, voters say they trust Republicans over Democrats by 7 points, 39 percent to 32 percent. Twenty-eight percent said they were unsure which party to trust.

The picture that emerges from the survey is consistent across issues of foreign policy and national security: Americans are profoundly wary of getting entangled overseas and seem to be skeptical of the value of projecting U.S. power on foreign conflicts. Republicans are modestly more hawkish than Democratic and independent voters, but a majority of self-identified GOP voters support pulling out of Afghanistan and maintaining or reducing involvement in Iraq, Syria and Ukraine.

Definitely not the year for old Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran to be spouting his hawkish spiels.. People are tired of old grey haired men sitting at their desks in D.C. sending kids off to die in other folks civil wars or so they and their corporate buddies can stuff their pockets with oil/war contracting profits...

Reminds me of the "We Are The World" movement to feed Africans, and the food that was delivered was sold to neighboring countries there for cash that went in the Leader's pocket.

If not us, then WHO?
Somebody has to lead the way. If not, the world will quickly become a horrible place to be, and the suffering of its inhabitants will be on a biblical scale.

I guess ole Mitt was way smarter than OT's boy when he said that Russia was our biggest geopolitical foe. The boy wonder laughed it off. Nobody's laughing now.

How about it, Fatman? What if you had family on the Malaysian airliner that was shot down, or had family killed by a teenaged illegal who just crossed the border like you or I would cross the street? You want the Russians to handle the investigation? Are you happy that Mexico is still holding a US Marine? Hundreds, if not thousands, are crossing into the US daily, and you have no problem with it. Your boy can't go to bat and get a serviceman released. One serviceman.

Your boy has zero clout or credibility anymore. The results of his six year coffee break are going to bite all of us in the ass, and soon. The voters will remember in November.

I know somebody who is tired of a certain gray haired old man sitting at his desk.

It might be different if said old man had a clue concerning the community organizer he gleefully voted for.

Everbody must be getting sick of obama's meddling and the arab springs he and his backers have been promoting.

Meanwhile, they want an open border, so everyone that wants to claim problems in their own Countries can claim asylum, so they can take advantage of the Nanny state gravy train.

Read the other day that Barry is spending another $500 Million in other Countries to teach citizens how to protest their governments.

"Bringing Democracy, to the 3rd World"

How much was it that Barry gave to Hamas? $900 million? Bought a lot of missiles, it would appear.

House passes resolution directing removal of troops from Iraq

By Cristina Marcos

The House on Friday passed a resolution directing President Obama to remove all troops from Iraq who aren't being used to protect diplomatic facilities.

The resolution passed with bipartisan support in a 370-40 vote. Three Democrats and 37 Republicans voted against the resolution, while 180 Republicans and 190 Democrats voted in favor.

The concurant resolution says Obama should remove armed forces within 30 days, but leaves him the option of keeping forces in Iraq until the end of the year if he determines a withdrawal would not be safe.

Yeah, you might think that if you didn't have a clue. It's probably that they don't want us kids murdered by the people Hussein has been arming to create the caliphate and because the of the ridiculous rules of engagement your lover has created causing them to be sitting ducks, and it has something to do with his lack of ability to negotiate a continued presence and forced withdraw of a less than stable number of personnel. That's besides the progressives like you that voted for the caliphate as well.

Remember to thank Allah for the Caliphate tonight.

If the majority believe in keeping their noses out of world problems...why is OT and everyone else so worried about investigating the Ukraine crash?
