Man Tracker!!!

Did you see that new show on OLN called Man Tracker-they give two people a two mile head start and they have about 30 miles to go in 36 hours-the tracker follows on his horse and tries to track them down. Pretty cool-he caught the two men after a day but the two young girls he was tracking in the thick bush beat him-he caught up to them a few times but they doubled back or hid or went through crap he couldn't. Pretty neat show for sure.

I haven't seen the show- but sounds interesting... Some of those Border Patrolmen that spend years on the southern border are pretty sharp mantrackers...I attended a couple of tracking courses put on by them and they had a lot of helpful info...Ways of measuring stride and footstep length that allows you to pick sign over hard ground- and techniques for leapfrogging ahead to cut them off....

One tracking job I did was when we were looking for a missing girl in the Missouri breaks...Two girls had got their car stuck in a snowdrift and took off walking.. We were alerted when a rancher found one girl beside the trail dead....I started tracking at sunset and tracked by headlights and flashlight until midnite when the snow and wind got so bad you couldn't see anything- marked the spot and went back the next morning to try to pick up the trail and while I was looking for sign the plane flew over us and spotted the body- not 1/4 mile from where I lost the trail and quit the night before...

The only consolation was in knowing that that one night hadn't mattered as she'd been dead for a couple days....

Old Timer,

I say this with a lump in my throat.....

Hats off to guys that do this. I haad an Uncle who was a volunteer Fireman. Carrying a dead child outta a fire kinda broke an egg in him. He never went off the deep end, but it did affect him....In rural areas, often volunteers are the only way to get a crew.

I had another freind who went on a search for a freind on a Missing Hnter deal. He caught up to him and the guy was a litle delirious. He had to talk him down and earn his trust to keep from getting shot. They had known each other all thier lives but a combination of cold and fear had worked on the guy...

Anyways, We appreciate the guys that do this,

Pat

Thanks Pat-- I saw almost the same thing with a Minnesota hunter that got lost in the Bitter Creek area-- somewhere along the line he shot his ear off crawling thru a fence- and then he got delirious- was actually trying to avoid us....When we found him he was hiding in a hole--If it hadn't been for the saddle horses spotting him and turning an ear toward where he was we may have rode right by him......

One of the reasons I retired when I did was that my eyesight was slipping enough I couldn't pick up on a lot of the little things- but I still help the Search and Rescue guys out- and have taught some classes for them...Left the groundwork and hard work to my son- who now helps out on some of the searchs, rescues, and recoveries....

Guys do funny things when they get lost-they say the decisions you make the first five minutes decide whether your going to live or die. Guys have crossed highways here when they were lost. Never spent a night out yet but I've spent a few hours hunting in no particular direction-you get up in this thick bush on a cloudy snowy day it's easy to do. Never tracked a human but I've had to find lots of deer for different people-one time I tracked a big buck for 6 hours and close to 8 miles-walked him down and shot him in his bed-he'd been hit in the ankle. We'd of had him in half an hour but the hunter didn't stay where I told him and missed the buck when he circled me. Another long track was a buck we call-Bobbit-it was an all dayer through the worst deadfall-this guy wounded him in well for lack of a better word -his penis-I think that old deer welcomed getting caught up to.
