mangey coyotes

There are different types of mange. Demodectic mange is contracted as puppies from bitches and is generally seen in puppies, but older dogs can be affected if they are sick or very under nurished.

Sarcoptic mange can be spread easily at any age. With this type, people can be itchy for a very brief period but it will not truly infect them.

Dogs and coyotes are similar enough that diseases can be transmissible back and forth, but many require direct contact so transmission is limited.

Not everyday but when they come through usually at 4 am in the summer we can hear them. Not a very happy site in the winter when I go feed and all the cows are standing in the conor of the pasture next to a gate this winter.
There is easier feed for them than cattle. The dogs also.
I think when they get the cattle up early the cows do the hot cow pile thing and thats the hot meal for them. They seem also to get full with hot after birth at calving. Really have not lost any calves for a while.(that we know of)

I helped start a Coyote Calling Contest in our Montana county...(yes, I got some calls from upset "animal lovers") but so many of the coyotes that were killed were mangy and I thought eliminating them did them a favor. I don't like it when there are too many coyotes (and we have too
many coyotes--they are now running in packs; our mule deer population is way down and there are hardly any fawns). I still hate to see them
have mange and freeze to death because of it. Not very humane and
a heck of a way to die. But so it goes...I really feel sorry for the fawns
the coyotes kill too.

I agree...mangey coyotes is sad to see..Mother Nature can be very cruel at times...

I shot a coyote this morning. After I shot another coyote took off for the hills and a third one ran for the corral right through the calves and into the far stack yard. Probably bedding down in the bales. He looked like he had the start of mange coming on.
