Sundflower leading her brother's horse. He had to pull a calf, and was then going to catch up with us.

They are staying paired up pretty well. We got them through the gate before our backup assistance arrived.

The Kosmo Kid and I would rope them and drag them through a gate. Some of the mammas were a bit ouchy about the whole procedure.
Kosmo's bride, Sweet Potato, ran the gate and found the right tag.

Yellowstone ready for action. Note: I don't condone leaving a horse unattended with a coiled rope hanging over the saddle horn,
but Yellowstone is mature enough to be responsible. A green horse can get himself and everyone else in a lot of trouble.

Have you had the experience of Archimides hot on a rabbit track through the middle of a herd yet? :D

Don't feel bad about the grass, it is still pretty white in this country.

Your confusing me :???:
First you say Kosmo is pulling a calf and Sunflower has his horse. What did he catch up on foot?

Then you show him on his horse pulling a calf. :???:

I don't think he could track a frankfurter through a pot full of beans  but his mere presence seems to put the cows on notice. He's a pretty good ol' hound, and he does kind of grow on ya.

The original plan was for him and his bride to just check the cows with the Polaris and join us fairly immediately. They ended up having to pull a calf, and our little three fourths of a mile cattle drive went better than expected, so their efforts were not needed. Sometimes moving cows with baby calves can be a real bugger, especially when the ground is soft. Everything went like a dream this time, and there were only 120 pairs in the bunch.

Later in the day we hauled our horses over to another location to tag these older calves. It is just much handier later in the spring to have them tagged, when we are sorting steer calves and their mommas to take to the neighbor's ranch for summer grass.

We're not very accurate but at least we work slow. :)
