Market update

I sold two loads of steers yesterday in Valentine NE. The market was probably 2 to 3 dollars higher than last week with the tumble in the corn market. This is the first group of cattle that I have sold on the new summer calving strategy. One load weighed 685 @ $104.50 and one load weighed 632 @ $110.00. The oldest calf was born about April 15th so I was happy with the weights. Last year I sold Mar and Apr born calves that I weaned and kept very green, probably too green that weighed 600 pounds a year ago and this year I weaned about the same time of year, fed them to gain a little more and month younger calves weighed more. I guess you can get them where you want them no matter how old they are. I wouldn't call my calves yesterday green but they weren't fleshy either. Anyway there's the update on summer calving. I am short of hay this year otherwise I probably would have kept them a little longer but I am happy with the sale. I think I will sell the rest in a couple weeks.

Good for you Big Swede.
I got an email from the guy that bought 75 of our steers last spring that he lost money on because of the market dropping. He wants 125 of them this year as last year the group averaged 2.85 lbs on grass.
