Post Office Looking at Closing up to 1,000 Offices
Local postal stations may be on chopping block as post office faces large losses
By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID Associated Press Writer
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON

The postal service is considering closing as many as 1,000 local offices as it battles staggering financial problems.

The post office has been struggling with a sharp decline in mail volume as people and businesses switch to e-mail both for personal contact and bill paying. The agency is facing a nearly $7 billion potential loss this fiscal year, despite a 2-cent increase in the price of stamps in May, cuts in staff and removal of collection boxes.

Also on the block are branch offices across the country and postal officials sent a list of nearly 700 potential candidates to the independent Postal Regulatory Commission.

More may be added, the postal service says. Those the current list of potential candidates can be viewed at http://www.prc.gov/Docs/63/63990/SBOC%20Full%20Study%20July%20List.pdf.

Now there is some common sense- but it will have the rightwing rural folks screaming probably- since the Dems are doing it....Because those little rural ones should be some of the ones they close- and in doing so will end up affecting many one stop post office/coffee shop/grocery stores....
Last time they did this- some rural Montanans went nutso....But our county has less than 8,000 people- and still has over half a dozen post offices and post masters... UPS on the other hand has one central office- that covers a half dozen (or more ) counties...

it might make sense if the service is no longer needed, but it would have made more sense to use some of the stimulus money to save those jobs until the economy improves.

you can't say there wasn't enough wasteful pork projects in the stimulus bill to cover these 1000 offices.

Close the postoffices and quit paying rent- or maintenance/utilities on them...Replace the part time Postmasters with contract mail carriers...I'd also shut down Sat delivery...If its something that has to be there immediately- you have UPS overnite or Federal Express or a couple more private carriers out there...

it comes down to whether they are paying for themselves, I agree.

like everything else.

Canada post is subsidized heavily too. With email, private mail carriers etc, some outlets should be shut down.

not sure on the timing is all.
