McCain Receiving Social Security Benefits

Thursday, July 17, 2008 2:00 PM

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Republican presidential candidate John McCain says he is receiving Social Security checks, but he says the system needs to be fixed if future generations are to enjoy the same benefits.

The senator from Arizona is about a month shy of his 72nd birthday and would be the oldest president elected.

Last week, McCain said the system for funding Social Security is "a disgrace" because it forces young workers to pay into a program that is unlikely to benefit them in its current form.

Social Security benefits are projected to exceed its tax revenues in about nine years. The program's trustees have said the Social Security trust fund will be depleted by 2041 unless the system is changed.

He paid in, its his. Why always wanting people to give up what is theirs to help support yourself? If you are not happy with your Social Security you should have saved more, invested etc.......

Why is it always about taking away something that belongs to someone else, so you libs do not have to pay as much or so you will get more?

If you need more money earn more money it really is that simple!

If he's paid it in...it's his.

If he married for money...good for him, spend as much as he can get away with and/or steal.

If he was born into money (which he wasn't though) good for him...just don't blow thru it all.

But, ya gotta wonder when they start cking into all those ' offshore' accounts....what's he gonna say when Cindy's shows up?

Is/will the IRS go after her? Makes one wonder.

I'm not doubting his right to draw it- its just ironic that he's calling it a "disgrace"- and saying he wants to do away with it-- while collecting his check...

Kola- you are correct-- it could be very interesting when the names of these thousands (19,000 undeclared accounts set up by UBS in Swiss Banks alone) become public....... :)

When I was a kid I used to mow lawns, haul hay and pick up soda bottles for extra nickels. I never told Uncle Sam about it. So I am probably just as guilty.

Honestly, I'm not real comfortable with all those names being made public.

Not everyone who has an off shore account is doing it illegally.

It seems to be that someone is wanting to raid the ' piggy banks' of others.

It's just got a creepy feeling about it all.

Some how I don't get the impression we're talking lawn mowing change or pop bottle nickels here...

The articles indicate that some of the accounts were also set up to avoid paying creditors and court orders and awards- besides just taxes...

Mr Birkenfeld was indicted in May, along with Mario Staggl, a Liechtenstein national, for his role in helping Igor Olenicoff, a real estate developer, evade paying taxes by helping to conceal $200m of assets. Mr Staggl is still at large. Mr Olenicoff has previously pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return.
