McCain's wife reports 6 million dollar income
4 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential pick John McCain, on Friday reversed course and released her 2006 tax return, showing personal income of six million dollars.

Cindy McCain, multi-millionaire heiress to a large beer distribution firm, had previously refused to reveal her tax information, sparking demands for transparency from Democrats, whose leading White House candidates have bared their finances.

The McCains file their taxes separately and keep their finances apart, and the campaign had previously argued that Cindy McCain's finances were a personal matter.

But aides took advantage of the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, a time when politicians often try to bury details they want to get little media coverage, to put out the first two pages of her tax filing.

The 2006 form showed that Cindy McCain declared income of six million dollars and paid 1.7 million dollars in federal taxes.

McCain released his personal tax filings for the last two years in April, but at the time, declined to detail his wife's financial affairs.

McCain revealed that he makes 162,000 dollars a year as a senator while last year he received 23,000 dollars in social security retirement payments, in addition to his 58,000 dollar pension as a retired navy pilot.

The 71-year-old de facto Republican nominee for president also received 80,000 dollars in 2006 and 176,000 dollars in 2007 in book royalties.
