Rodney coronado under federal indictment
Federal officials in San Diego unsealed a one-count indictment against longtime militant Rodney Coronado Wednesday evening. Coronado had been arrested earlier in the day in Tucson, Arizona by FBI and ATF agents on the federal charge that he demonstrated the use of a destructive device with the intent that the device be used to commit arson. He faces up to 20 years in a federal prison if convicted.
Readers of AMP News Service will remember that Coronado gave a presentation in San Diego August 1, 2003 that included how to make and use a (How to Edited Out). His speech came just 15 hours after the nation's costliest incident of eco-terrorism to date – a $50 million arson that destroyed a luxury condominium project under development in San Diego. The arson was claimed by the Earth Liberation Front. Coronado is not charged with that fire.
Coronado is best remembered in the research community for serving four years of a federal sentence for a number of federal crimes which included the 1992 firebombing of a Michigan State University laboratory and the offices of two animal researchers that caused $1.2 million in damage.
The news release from the U.S. Attorney's office, and two early news accounts follow. Coronado is expected to be arraigned today in Tucson. Heavy media coverage may be anticipated over the next several days. AMP will post information as warranted.
