We Americans (most of us) are proud and protective of our flag, but there are a lot of people who hate the flag and all it stands for.
I wrote this not long after 9/11
Flag
It has flown over the beaches of Normandy,
and the sands of Afghanistan.
It has proudly waved over rodeo arenas from Valentine to Cheyenne.
This symbol of American pride
has been cursed, trampled and torn,
in a display of insane hatred
by the radical ones, who scorn
the freedom we take for granted,
because we've known no other way.
But, when our nation gets trifled with
we have always been quick to pay
in blood and sweat, and lives.
We are willing to sacrifice,
to protect it from any foe.
We have always paid the price
Of what it takes to keep it waving,
strong, and proud, to see.
Over all free Americans,
throughout this vast country.
