Michelle's 'Get Moving' Program Linked to Pedestrian Deaths

WASHINGTON -- The Governors Highway Safety Association says pedestrian deaths increased in the first half of 2010 and the First Lady's program to get Americans to be more active could be partly responsible.

Governors Highway Safety Administration spokesman Jonathan Adkins told 630 WMAL that Michelle Obama is "trying to get us to walk to work and exercise a little bit more. While that's good, it also increases our exposure to risk."

As much as I abhor Michelle, pawning pedestrian deaths on her is ridiculous.

People do need to be more active. Way too many are obese.

Words of wisdom there.

I now spend most of my days outside the US. It's always stunning to me when I arrive at the Houston airport and see just how "big" the average American is these days.

maybe the uptick in deaths is due to NJ kneejerk reaction and new law.. :?

NJ Drivers Must “Stop And Stay Stopped” For Pedestrians

“By changing the language in the state’s 50-year old pedestrian statute from yield to stop, motorists now know that when they approach a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk, they must stop and remain stopped to allow that pedestrian to cross safely,”

The warning in state literature is clear: "Motorists in New Jersey MUST stop for pedestrians in a marked crosswalk."

This summer could spell disaster for Pedestrians who trust this new law. The false sense of security this law relays to pedestrians will sadly end in tragedy.

the new law puts all the responsibility on the driver, and I have already had several near misses since.. now I have become used to looking at the sidewalk as well as the traffic, but the pedestrian stupidity level has gone up significantly as many rely on a law to stop a fully loaded truck pulling a heavy trailer... the death toll is bound to increase..
