Money

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama raised $32 million in January, a whopping figure that has permitted the campaign to boost staff and extend advertising to states beyond the sweeping Feb. 5 contests, aides said Thursday.

In comparison, John McCain had raised a total of about $34 million at the end of 2007. Obama raised as much in one month as McCain has through the previous months of campaigning. And Obama added 170,000 new contributors during the month of January while McCain was borrowing against his campaign "assets" and turning to lobbyists for money. We don't know how much of his own fortune Mitt has spent or how much he's willing to spend. But it's looking more and more like McCain is the Republican nominee.

Wonder how much the Huang's, the Chinese, and the Lippos are donating to Hillary?

Don't know, but she took in $90 million last year and Obama $80 million. Each one of them raised as much as all Republican candidates combined. Ron Paul may have raised more money than McCain. You need to get that checkbook out and start supporting your party. :D

Yep-- its almost unheard of-- the amount of money, from all types of sources, this year is going to the Democrats...They will have money to burn in the Congressional and Senate races...

Could this be an indication that folks are not happy with the policies and leadership of the past 7 years
:???:

From the Votemaster:

To recapture the House, the Republicans need to hold all their own seats (which will be virtually impossible) and knock off 16 sitting Democrats. That would be a tall order under any conditions, but in a year when Democrats are energized, Republicans are demoralized, and the country wants change, it will be especially difficult. What makes this very, very problematic is the money situation. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), chairman of the DCCC had $30 million in the bank as of early January. Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), chairman of the NRCC had $2 million (and debts of more than $2 million). Basically, Van Hollen is loaded and Cole is broke. Van Hollen has already announced about 40 priority districts he wants to pick up. He can afford to dump half a million dollars in each one and still have $10 million for emergency use. Half a million dollars is peanuts in the presidential race, but a lot of money for a House race (the median bank account for incumbents was about $400,000 a couple of months ago). Cole is trying to recruit rich businessmen who can finance their own races, but historically, such candidates generally lose when running against an experienced politician, usually a state senator or assemblyman or the mayor of a big city in the district. All in all, the Republicans have a massive problem on their hands with respect to the House. They could easily lose another 10+ seats, and the chances of their taking back control there are pretty dismal.

I hope that is all it is.

Or maybe it is that the Democrats are selling out to special interest groups, big business and China.

If it was the Republicans bringing in record droves of money that is how you would spin it. But since it is the Democrats then it is innocent hard working people looking for change.

You need to look at both parties through the same colored eye glasses. That much money being donated will come with some pretty big IOU's.

It could very well be....But historically that Big Business, freetrader, Corporate, Wallstreet money has gone to Republicans- hoping for tax cuts and shelters for big business, the rich, and corporate elitists...Why not this year?

One of the earlier articles posted showed Big Business that had previously always donated heavy Republican - this year are giving smaller donations to the Repubs- but 3-4-5 times more to Dems...

Could it be they don't believe the splintered Republican party has a chance in Hades of winning anything - and being able to assert any control- so they are putting the money where they think it will do the best good :???:

If you really believe McCain or Romney have no chance of beating Clinton or Obama you are showing your prejudiced and lack of reasoning of this election.

I am telling you now, it will be a decisive victory for the Republicans against either Obama or Hillary!

I just wish betting on the presidential election was legal I would be all over this bet.

I think the only outside chance the Dems have is if Conservatives stay at home if McCain is the man running. But if its against Hillary as suspected I think they will still come out to stop her. I would be tempted to stay at home if it is McCain against Obama but no way if it is against Hillary!

!

I'm aware of no law that makes betting on an election illegal...Vegas has new odds daily- and I'm sure you can quickly find someone that will place a few thousand on a wager for you if you don't want to go to Vegas...

And they are wagering for it daily on the internet- you just need a British or foreign country credit card and its plumb legal....

Heres a site for you:

http://www.oddschecker.com/specials/politics-and-election/us-presidential-election/to-be-elected-president

As of today---You can get 2 to 1 odds on McCain, 3 to 1 on Obama, 16-1 on Romney, and 100 to 1 on Huckleberry right now....250 to 1 on Paul...

Hillary still isn't worth putting a bet down as she's still 1 to 1....

Interestingly some are still betting on Bloomberg 50 to 1 and Al Gore 66 to 1......

The cartels and other organized crime must be doing great. Didn't realize they were doing that well.

You're exactly right, Apls. That much money isn't coming from the common people just wanting to support a candidate. That is coming from people expecting something in return - those are "investments", not "donations".
