Senators press Japan PM to sample Montana beef

By Tom Johnston on 4/25/2007 for Meatingplace.com

Montana senators want Japan's prime minister to have a taste of their state — or steak — when he visits the White House for a formal dinner this week.

Sens. Max Baucus and Jon Tester sent a letter to the White House asking that it serve Montana steaks to Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his delegation, providing an opportunity to "make a deliciously irresistible case that Montana beef belongs in the Japanese market."

Tarah C. Donoghue, deputy press secretary for First Lady Laura Bush, said in response that the White House doesn't divulge any menus until the night of the dinner, the Casper Star-Tribune reported.

The senators hope to eliminate Japan's restrictions on U.S. beef imports.

"There are lots of diner choices in Washington, but nothing beats a big, red, juicy steak from (Montana)," Tester said. "Prime Minister Abe is in for a real treat. So are millions of Japanese, as soon as the ban is lifted."
