Montana......Gone to the Goats?

MANHATTAN, Mont. Jun 14, 2006 (AP)— The town council has ordered Bob Perkins to find a new home for the goat that eats the weeds and grass on his front lawn. "I can have two obnoxious dogs, but not a cute goat," Perkins said.

Mayor Tony Haag said the town of about 1,400 people is growing and cannot afford to allow one of its residents to have a goat. If it did, he said, what would stop other town residents from keeping goats, too?

An adjacent property owner recently complained about the goat, which Perkins has owned for about a year.

Initially, a police officer informed Perkins that keeping the animal in the city could be punishable by a fine and jail time.

The town council voted Tuesday night to force him to remove the goat from the city limits.

Sadie Hensler, who rents a house next to Perkins, wrote a letter to the town council saying the goat was quiet and friendly.

Harold Ralston, who works at a dog-grooming business said, "All it does is mow the lawn."

Before adopting Buddy the goat, Perkins has kept sheep on his property to keep the weeds and grass at bay. Over the years, he has had 13 different sheep, and they were all named Buddy.

"They were a real babe magnet," Perkins said. "It's the way I met half of my ex-wives."

Things are strange in the 'urban areas of Montana.

I will say however, the County Commissioners around Bozeman did something right. They had a complaints from property owners about a meat processing plant that 'smelled bad' and they requested the commissioners to do something about it. The commissioners met to discuss the problem and here is what they decided.

The processing plant was in place before the surrounding area was subdivided and homes built. Therefore, the commissioners weren't
going to do anything about the alleged problem. They went on to advise the homeowners to 'look around' better before buying property and
to be more aware of potential problems.

My hat is off to those commissioners. About time someone took a stand.

Wish we had commissioners with 'guts' here. There was an old farm nearby with a beeeeautiful old barn on it. Some city clicker moved in on the next acerage, and complained that the old barn blocked his view. His view of WHAT was the question.

Anyway....the Co Comm. made the old farmer tear down his 100 yr old barn ( was in excellent shape and useable) so this idiot could ' see'. It was at the farmers personal expense.

Two yrs later...Mr. City Slicker moved and went on his way....so all that fuss and heartache and loss of history for nothing!!!

Sometimes they need reminded who elected them.

On the other hand,
in Montana, the newbies tend to get elected on school boards, city
council, etc. I can't believe that happens but it does. Perhaps it is
because we tend to be so apathetical in this state.

(Is that a word? )

Anyway, seems to me we are kind of a 'live and let live' state,
UNLESS something gets our dander up.

I bet that place is getting more and more californicated as the time goes by. My dad visited me when I lived out there and was in shock. He had been out there for some meeting back in the 70's and just couldn't believe what had happened to the valley. I talk to folks who still live there and they tell me how much it has changed just in the last 5 years or so.. Sad... I wonder if that meat plant is the one west of four corners... That is the only place that I can think of right now, houses were pushing out in that direction when I lived there..

The best part about Manhatten was the Oasis...

If most of that town is citified environmentalists you'd
think they'd applaud NOT using a gasoline powered mower.

It probably wouldn't hurt his cause to tidy himself up a tad
while he's at it :!:

how right you are....manhattan used to be a nice, quiet little agricultural community that has since been taken over by the "boze-angeles" crowd of outta staters who wanna turn their new "home" into the same thing they left behind!! sad!!

The way we always put it was that the people thought that moving to the county would solve all their problems... But the problems tend to follow them because they didn't realize that a major problem was the choices they made... I keep trying to tell my wife that we probably don't want to visit out there.. would probably break our hearts.
