Montana MUST Be Doing Very Poorly

Roadkill a delicacy there? Do they eat skunks too? No wonder the suicide rate is so high!

A bill allowing individuals to salvage the meat from roadkilled game animals passed last week in Montana's House of Representatives, the Daily Inter Lake reported.
The measure passed 19-2 last week in the House and is now on its way to the state Senate, according to the newspaper. State Rep. Steve Lavin, a proponent of the bill, said the legislation is better than it sounds.
"When people first hear about it — roadkill — some of them think this is a crazy bill, but it’s not," Lavin told the newspaper.
Lavin originally drafted the bill to allow generic "game animals, fur-bearing animals, migratory game birds and upland game birds" to be salvaged. But the idea was raising concerns among officials with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, according to the newspaper.
Many different kinds of game animals, including Bighorn sheep, bears and mountain lion, are killed by vehicles in the Thompson Falls area. The bill would allow to salvage the animals solely for their meat.

Does "road killed" include sitting on the right of way and shooting them from the vehicle.

Actually not too bad an idea-- rather than paying a game warden or Hiway maintenance man to drive the highways picking up the dead animals- let those that want to take them home for dog food or whatever to do so... I know some of those that raises foxes and have mink have used deer carcass's they ground up for feed...

There have been times when a train has killed hundreds of antelope just a mile or two out of town- and I'm sure some would be plumb fine to eat (if you like antelope) if they got them taken care of quick - and folks could help clean up the site..

Used to be- if you had a bunch of cows hit and killed by a semi- or on the tracks -- with the owners permission, all it would take is one or two phone calls to the reservation and within an hour or so you would have a crew that took/used everything except the beller  .... Altho there aren't as many of those old Indians left around anymore- and too many of the young ones that grew up eating at KFC wouldn't know what to do if it didn't come already cooked in a Styrofoam box....

I really doubt if the law will pass-as they have tried to pass similar ones in the past and the Fish and Game has always killed them...They are afraid someone might steal one of the Kings deer...

looks like common sense law to me---sometimes we can see 1000 whitetails in 20 miles. lots of road kill, sometimes nice trophy bucks. i'vs shot crippled ones and drug 'em off the road---seems like a waste, if somebody can utilize them, let them have at it

If the law enforcement had come down on anyone for picking up road kill in the past they should have been fired. If they had time to harass anyone picking up roadkill they had way to much free time

Same goes for passing laws on this crap, way to much time on their hands

I've had Fish and Game come in wanting search warrants to go get a rack that they had probable cause on that was on a road kill someone picked up along the road....Or once on a rancher that cut off the rack of a big buck that died next to his haystack...... You don't touch one of the Kings livestock without the Kings permission....

This was best shown about 15 years ago- when a young Indian man was murdered on the tracks by Brockton and the feds put a $5,000 reward up for info leading to conviction on who killed him---but when they illegally killed a royal bull elk down in Yellowstone they put up a $50,000 reward for info...
Shows you the priorities put forth by the government agencies...

Thats odd because here game and fish don't need search warrants. They can come on your place anytime and check and even ck your freezer.

They can in Valley County because they had a second cousin who knew someone whose uncle met a judge at the convenience store

It's a poaching issue here as well. You can pick up natural sheds but if you find a antlers still attached to to skull you are to leave it lay. I was told they are the "Queens" property so I asked if the "Queen" would pay to fix my tire and they said "No" so I said then I am picking up any I come across. :?

Yeah- the tire shops made a fortune off tractor and equipment tires after the EHD disease swept thru the whitetail here a couple years ago... A lot of deer died in the fields- altho the majority were right along the river... Still don't see many whitetail down on the river bottom...More mulies than ever..

I don't know of a farmer that will turn down someone wanting to walk their fields looking for sheds....

funny part is that OT makes fun of other states for "getting with the times", when other states have had these type of roadkill laws for years.

Why have a "roadkill" law at all?

Just be happy the Dems. haven't mandated trading in food stamps, for roadkill, as likely as that may become, by the time obama is done.
