Montana play calls for beheading of Palin

I wonder who the real radicals are in Montana?

Children’s Theater Adds ‘Decapitating Sarah Palin’ To Kids Play
By Warner Todd Huston

To prove once again that leftists are simply lying when they whine about wanting a “new tone” in America’s political discourse, to show that what they really mean by “new tone” is that conservatives should be afraid to say anything — and should just shut up over the fear of seeming gauche — while liberals can be as vile and violent as they like, we turn to the Missoula Children’s Theater in Missoula, Montana.

In the Rocky Mountains of western Montana we find that a director of a production of the venerable Gilbert and Sullivan stage play, “The Mikado,” decided it would be funny to add a little extra, modern reference to his production for all the kiddeis to enjoy. That little extra touch didn’t sit well with a member of the audience, though.

To vent his frustration on that little flourish, Mr. Rory Page decided to send a letter to the editor of the Missoulian.

Open letter to MCT director Curt Olds:

First I would like to compliment you and the entire staff of “The Mikado” on the beautiful sets, costuming and professional performance we experienced on Sunday, Jan. 23. However, I must call you on something that was inserted into the play which I am almost positive was not in the original book.

The comments made in such a cavalier and oh-so-humorous way were uncalled for. Now, I realize you play to a mostly liberal audience in Missoula and so, I am sure, felt comfortable in your calling for the beheading of Sarah Palin. I am painfully aware that most in the audience tittered with laughter and clapped because “no one would miss her” but there were some in your audience who took great offense to this “uncivil tone” about another human being.

We are in the midst of a crisis that took place in Tucson where many started pointing fingers at that horrible right wing with all their hatred and targeting and standing for the second amendment and on and on and on. So, here we are in a lovely play with beautiful voices serenading us and we have to hear that it is okay to call for the killing of Sarah Palin because we don’t like her and no one would miss her. Unbelievable.

As a professional you should be ashamed of yourself, the audience should be ashamed of themselves and I am ashamed of myself for not standing up and leaving at that very moment. I would like to see an apology from you not because I want to hinder free-speech but for the hypocrisy this so clearly shows.

Ah, there we have it. That little flourish added by this nice, new tone lefty children’s theater director in Missoula was a joke about beheading Sarah Palin. It’s hilarious, no? A scream, no doubt.

Of course, what a reference to beheading Sarah Palin is doing in a play written in 1885 featuring a story set in medieval Japan is anybody’s guess. But, hey, we have that wonderful new tone and everything going for us still, right?

UPDATE

Michael McGill, the Director of the Missoula Community Theater has apologized for the violent rhetoric of beheading Sarah Palin contained in his theater’s production of “The Mikado.” (download copy of letter HERE)

The apology reads:

I am sorry that the satirical reference to Sarah Palin has offended some of our patrons. Gilbert & Sullivan were well-known as satirists, addressing the social and cultural issues of their day—aristocracy, government, etc…. Some of the lyrics performed in The Mikado around the country today reflect the issues and topics of our time. We know that “MCT” means many things to many people—and we are blessed with passionate, loyal audiences, here in Missoula and around the world. In this instance, however, we are talking about an MCT Community Theatre production (not to be confused with a Missoula Children’s Theatre production). Although MCT Community Theatre did not pen the lyrics that were found to be offensive, we have taken the action of removing them from this production. It is my hope that the audiences will appreciate the hard work, artistry and beauty within this MCT Community Theatre production of The Mikado.

Could it be that “civility” really IS a double edged sword? Could it be that these lefties are suddenly realizing that they can’t just use that wunnerful “new tone” as a weapon against conservatives but otherwise to be ignored? Could the cold, hard reality that THEY should also be held to the “new tone” be dawning on them? Probably not.

Interesting, eh?

thanks for the heads up on this one, once I found out MCT was partially state funded I composed this letter and sent to several of my state reps.

Here is something you may or may not have read up about.
why is the state of Montana funding this sort of thing?
What can we do to stop this?
Montana is broke, maybe here is a good place to start Budget cuts?
I know,I know, political suicide " but it's for the children"
they are a 501 c3- aren't there any rules they have to play under to get this money?
if not shouldn't there be?

If the Republicans in Washington have their way they will not be getting National Endowment of the Arts funds as that is one of the programs that are on the chopping block in DC. If the Liberals are using the ARTS to push their crap satire then it should never be funded again by tax dollars.

BTW I thought satire was suppose to be funny. When did beheading of a strong conservative mother of five become funny in American culture?

I bet if anyone had done that about Obumer they would have been boo'd.

Sorry Tam, but OT is better then a couple people over there who act arrogant and nasty. Had a run in with them down in Billings.
We just don't talk politics.

But as for Glasgow they are a bunch of nice people.

This:
Despite MCT's fast retreat, the issue quickly went viral on the Internet over the weekend, spurred by a Friday blog post by Wall Street Journal online opinion editor James Taranto. In a short opinion piece titled, "Curt Olds, the Lord High Executioner: Eliminationist rhetoric against Sarah Palin," Taranto argued that the Palin reference was an example - though he did not name others - of widespread hate speech in the arts world.

"This incident is shocking but not surprising," Taranto wrote. "For all the bogus accusations being thrown at Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin, genuinely hateful political rhetoric is commonplace in the art world, even in art that is not overtly political."

Political bloggers around the country quickly followed Taranto's lead.

led to this:

The onslaught left Curt Olds deeply shaken on Monday. The Butte native and University of Montana graduate said he never anticipated that the Palin reference would spark anything more than laughter.

Now we know why the lefties are so scared of Sarah- we love her!
and we have her back on this!
The more they attack her the stronger she gets!
How else did a little story out of a play in MT get national attention.

I think not understanding the consequences of their actions is something common in the liberal world.. :?

Finally made it to the Great Falls Tribune. The libbies came out of the woodwork. making all sorts of comments.

Maybe that guy needs to realize for every action there is a reaction.

First off.... i didnt read everyones comments so if this points already been made my apologies.

Second..... I am a conservative and think very highly of Sara Palin.

Third and the real point.....The Mikado was written in such a way so that you could change portions of the songs, adding in the names of people. Thus in all performances the cast/crew/what ever could choose whose names they inserted.

Though i haven't seen the play since i was little i do remember that there are many opening for peoples names to be added in to the song "i've got a little list" (or something like that) which is a song about who would not be missed if the person singing (lord high executioner) needed to hold a public execution.

My thought process on this one would be as long as the cast choice from both sides of the political spectrum i would walk out without insult however if the songs and jokes were one sides then i might be insulted and not bring business back to that theater.

Anyway....didn't know if you all knew the background to a very cleaver play the "Mikado" (??SP??). If you have never seen it try to find a copy of it, they are out there. You will see other people made fun of from previous decades in them.

Missoula, Mt. is land of the liberals. You're not gonna see both sides of
the political spectrum there.

It's been full of liberals for years and years...

I think also the timing of the comments in the play caused much of the up roar. The president had just called for this kind of rhetoric to tone down after the Tucson shootings and it's like the Liberal left never heard him.

I saw the play before so I know what it is about, but doing it after the Tuscon shooting and in the most liberal city in Montana was taste less.

Just to clarify, i did not see the play, or believe that it was probably written to be fair across the board on who on "the little list" however i wanted to make sure everyone knew the background of the play.
