Montana Property tax

I had read on a couple other forums that the tax rate had increased as much as 53% in some places.
I was wondering how those here were dealing with the new higher tax bill?

How do you deal with it?
You can pay them under protest. :?

We have a 10 acre piece in the middle of some grazing ground that
we got after we bought the rest of the ranch. This was a piece some
people in Washington owned because an ancestor owed some money
at the grocery store and they gave them 10 acres of ground. Anyway,
we got that 10 acres in our name several years ago. When Mt.
did this tax restructuring :? they valued that 10 acres at $30,000.
I did appeal and they reduced it to an assessment of $300.
There were a lot of instances like that. We still haven't got the tax
statement from the treasurer's office, because now she's way
behind because of all the appeals. She visited with me the other day
and she said CRP land is valued at cropland rates, hay ground is
valued at higher than cropland. Grazing land is valued at less.
I think Mt. has gone the way of valueing land at what it might sell
for instead of what it will produce.

Too many liberals in the Montana State government. :x

P.S.
Gripes me to no end that Mt. does not have a sales tax. Every state
around us does. It is the fairest tax of all. Montana wants this state
as a playground for the rich, yet gets nothing from the rich except
what they buy in the stores when they pass through. Oh yeah, they pay a
'bed tax' when they stay in a motel, hotel, etc. In Montana the
tax burden falls on the property owner and those who pay a state
income tax. Montana is about 50 years behind the times...

Like Doc Harris says, "don't get me started!"

our overall bill went up 55%

some of the different pieces went up 300%
of course we appealed- paid under protest- they held the $ for 90 days
then cashed the check, they will "reimburse" us when they get through all the appeals.

wages/calf prices didn't go uo 55%- so my family has to cut back
govt. needs to cut back too!!

I'm with you FH on the sales tax- but the property tax must be eliminated first.
how many places were lost to back taxes in the 30's??

at least sales tax is a choice, you can choose not to buy something.

We talked to the assesor this week about our house into town. She told us that housing in Valentine hadn't gone down in the last five years that there really wasn't any recession in the housing in Valentine... She also said that with Ted Turner buying all the land had raised the taxes considerable.. I guess one way to look at it is.... We made a good investment that is holding its value...... :cowboy:

That's better than most are doing, katrina. Good for you guys!

Lonecowboy, you are correct.
I should have mentioned that the property taxes need
to go first!! I'm not holding my breath getting a sales tax
enacted tho--unless things change. I kinda gave up
when Marc Rociot couldn't get it done, as popular as he was.

Property owners in Mt are just STUCK !
And Montana government doesn't want business here.
They want Montana for a playground for the rich and we
peons can pay for it. GRRRRRR :x

Our property taxes went up in the 50% range too.

well FH the climate is right for some much needed change
if we can just get a CONSERVATIVE majority elected to the state legislature.
heck if even liberal Massachusets can get a republican in "Kennedy's seat" then Montana ought to be able to get a conservative majority elected. We've been complacent for way too long- we all need to get active and get some good people elected.

They have newly formed a Republican Central Committee here and
I joined. Now what we need are Conservatives, not just Republicans.
That is one reason why I joined; we really need to be on top of
this...

At least, finally, the Republicans are speaking out. They spent much
too long being quiet; not explaining themselves adequately. They
let the Dems/libs do their talking for them; thinking the people knew
the truth. Well, they didn't. That approach did not work. The time
is NOW and they need to stand up and be counted. They seem
to be doing that, more than they ever have.

Question. I've been meaning to ask this.
Why don't we hear more about John Boehner in the national scene?
I think he's a good man, but he's never mentioned when talking
about Presidental or Vice Presidental candidates.
