Summary Box: Drought pushing more cattle to market
Associated Press

GOING TO MARKET: A lingering drought in Texas, the nation's biggest cattle producing area, and other key cow states is prompting ranchers to send more cattle to the slaughterhouse.

THE NUMBERS: Federally inspected beef cow slaughter in April was up 17 percent from the same month a year ago, coming on the heels of a 13 percent jump in March. May beef cow slaughter is estimated to be up 9.4 percent.

A GROWING WORRY: Texas and Oklahoma cattlemen have been struggling with the shortage of grazing for months now, but worries are growing in Kansas and other states as summer begins.

I feel for those fighting drought wherever they are. It's not good here, but I will have enough carryover hay for my herd that has been downsized since '02.

This year is like '02 in many ways, including me not putting up any hay. Some folks are out there and getting a few bales. But overall the results are disappointing for the fuel and wear and tear expended.

We are in the worst drought in memory. No hay. No pasture. Cows prices are falling like a rock. Never been this bad before here.

Feed mills are lovin' it though.

Mike, did you get any rain this past weekend? I've caught the edge of a few showers that have kept it from getting really ugly over here. My hay man says he is getting about half of normal on what he has cut. My rented pasture has been questionable the last few years(owner passed away)...about half my acreage...so my numbers are down...thankfully! My cows might "escape" over there and I doubt I could find them for a few days(weeks).

No. The last rain we had was the first week in May. Got 3/8".

Have had about 1" since February. Some around me have gotten a few sprinkles but missed us all around.

Tractor has run non-stop pumping water but kinda like pissing in the ocean.

We need a Hurricane!
