More government overreach

I went to Safeway to buy a ham. I asked the butcher if he would cut it for me. I wanted it into ham steaks and a ham hock. He shook his head and said they couldn't do that anymore. "Cross contamination" he said, "and government rules we can't do that anymore."

Good grief. Butchers have been cutting meat for customers for years.
Thank you government for protecting us. You are ever so vigilante.

Ah needs me ah new pair of boots, sure hope the government has decided what kind I want.

"want" is not the issue...safety and what damages the environment is more important.

I hear the Chinese make an environmentally friendly boot...

Capitalism promotes racism. Don't forget.

More than likely he was cutting beef or chicken at the time and could not cut pork with the same saw blade.

Meats are cut on certain days in most stores. Monday is beef, Tues is pork...etc etc.

That way all the equip is kept cleaner and there is no chance of cross contamination btwn the meats.

There is a sensible reason to it, he was not a gov't dupe trying to screw YOU over.

If any of you have ever butcher'd anything at home....if you did it right you DID NOT use the same utensils on the hogs that you used on the beef and so on.

It's just common sense.

Oh wait a minute....I forgot who I was talking to for a minute.

Nevermind....you go right ahead and use that chicken/hog/beef butcher knife to cut your lettuce ....that's EXACTLY what you should do!!!

I wasn't in a hurry. He didn't say he could do it on Monday or Tuesday, etc.
He said "I can't do it, due to government regulations on cross-contamination.
We used to be able to do it up to 2 years ago. I'm sorry."
I could have waited for the day he could do it, he was empathic that he can
no longer cut meat to order. It was bone-in and he had to use a saw to slice
it with. I know what he said and I know what he meant. I was there.

Instead of bitchin' about how you were mistreated maybe he was looking out for your well being? "Bone in" tells you why he could not do it.

So, by your statement I was right, they have certain days they cut certain types of meat.

Aside from the smears of one another, could it be that regulations have changed and that store didn't want, or was unable to, comply with changes required? Not saying changes were/are needed in that particular store, but sometimes it seems that updates have to be made and some businesses choose to cut the services rather than make the changes.

I've had a meat saw 'forever', at least since the days of home butchering which ended on this ranch quite a while before we were married 57 years ago. The saw was kept and we find it handy occasionally for just the job you wanted done, FH. Bet you could find one in an antique store, or even at a 'back to the land' type catalog, or Lehmans.

I know you can cut it up avoiding the bone, but cutting the bone makes it fit smaller pans, which many of us with just a couple in the home find more practical for most meals.

I have no idea why there is an argument on this subject. Some people just like to argue for the sake of an argument. I made my statement and it is what it is, more government overreach.

I thought of buying an electric saw, but we really have no other use for it. I can go to a regular butcher shop and buy a ham and have it cut, and I will. I was just surprised at the regulations that prevent a chain store from processing a ham the way I wanted it done.
