McCain security ousts reporter

By Paul Flemming
FLORIDA CAPITAL BUREAU

Tallahassee Democrat senior writer Stephen Price on Friday was singled out and asked to leave a media area at the Panama City rally of presidential candidate Sen. John McCain.

Price was among at least three other reporters, and the only black reporter, surrounding McCain's campaign bus — Gov. Charlie Crist and his fiancee, Carole Rome, were already aboard — when a member of the Arizona senator's security detail asked the reporter to identify himself. Price had shown his media credentials to enter the area.

Price showed his employee identification as well as his credentials for the Friday event.

"I explained I was with the state press, but the Secret Service man said that didn't matter and that I would have to go," Price said.

When another reporter asked why Price was being removed, she too was led out of the area. Other state reporters remained.

Jonathan Block does advance work for McCain's campaign. He was in Panama City on Friday but was not present when reporter Stephen Price was asked to move from a restricted area.

"Access to the senator is tightly controlled," Block said. "I would first express regret that your reporter was moved, and I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that race had nothing to do with it."

Tallahassee Democrat Executive Editor Bob Gabordi said the incident was unwarranted.

"We're deeply concerned and disturbed that our reporter — of all of those in that area — was asked to move," Gabordi said. "My understanding is that Stephen was the only reporter approached and asked to leave the area, and the only reporter in that area who is black. Another reporter who stood up for Stephen was then asked to leave."

A Panama City police officer approached while Price was speaking to the security member. Panama City police were unavailable for comment Friday night.

Block said the area where Price was standing was restricted to members of the traveling national press corps that accompanies McCain on the campaign trail.

"At the end of the day, your reporter was in the wrong place. I do not know why the other reporters were not moved. The rest of the local press should have been moved as well," Block said.

The campaign advance man said there were many reasons that could have prompted Price being asked to move, depending on how visible his press identification was, whether he had a bag and possibly information about McCain's movement, which could have prompted the security person to move people in one area and not in another.

"It's really like a pressure cooker with security," Block said.

Nope- probably because they wouldn't like the questions we asked....
Well, why the hell is it okay to suggest that McCain is a racist just because a black reporter was asked to leave?

Gergen: McCain Using Code Words To Attack Obama As "Uppity"

August 3, 2008 01:16 PM
On Sunday, longtime Washington hand David Gergen took umbrage with John McCain's recent attack ads, charging that the Senator was using coded messaging to paint Barack Obama as "outside the mainstream" and "uppity."

"There has been a very intentional effort to paint him as somebody outside the mainstream, other, 'he's not one of us,'" said Gergen, who has worked with White Houses, both Republican and Democrat, from Nixon to Clinton. "I think the McCain campaign has been scrupulous about not directly saying it, but it's the subtext of this campaign. Everybody knows that. There are certain kinds of signals. As a native of the south, I can tell you, when you see this Charlton Heston ad, 'The One,' that's code for, 'he's uppity, he ought to stay in his place.' Everybody gets that who is from a southern background. We all understand that. When McCain comes out and starts talking about affirmative action, 'I'm against quotas,' we get what that's about."

At the same time Gergen was calling out the Arizona Republican on ABC's This Week, Mike Murphy, McCain's campaign manager during the 2000 Republican primary, was describing the Senator's recent spot comparing Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton as "clumsy, juvenile, and a mistake."

"I think it was a dumb ad," said Murphy, during an appearance on Meet The Press. "Not because it asked the question, 'is Barack Obama ready for the job?' That's a very legitimate criticism, and I think Barack Obama made it a little bit worse by his stumbling response later. The problem is that McCain -- McCain's strategy has to hinge, in my view, on one thing: how does a Republican survive in October and November a huge anti-Republican vote? Luckily for the party, McCain is a different kind of Republican. So everything in the campaign ought to build toward that case. And when if you get off into the small juvenile stuff about Britney Spears, I think you distract from that."

Gergen and Murphy's criticism of the McCain ad capped off a several day period in which the suitability of using Spears and Hilton in a presidential campaign was hotly debated. Surrogates to the Arizona Republican, including Sens. Joseph Lieberman and Lindsay Graham (both appearing on separate Sunday shows) said the advertisement was legitimate as it called into question Obama's readiness for the White House. Earlier in the week, another former McCain campaign manager, John Weaver, described the ad as "childish" and wondered aloud if it diminished his stature.

The Senator's own mother, Roberta McCain, while acknowledging that she had not seen the Britney spot, called the idea "stupid." And Kathy Hilton, Paris' mother, took to the Huffington Post Sunday morning to deride McCain from dragging down the intellectual thrust of the campaign.

"It is a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign. It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs. And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States."

I know where the headline came from. Unfortunately, we have to google everything that you post now - IF we even read it. We have to google everything to check on the origin - or to check to see if it's even true. :???:

The headline came from one of your favorite liberal blogs:

http://politicalirony.com/2008/08/03/mccain-racist/

But YOU are the one who chose to make an issue of it here with your highlighting. YOU are the one who chose to highlight and underline things like this:

...the only black reporter...

YOU never mentioned that it was wrong - only that "he better get a handle on it." As if McCain should do something about what should be a non-issue.

You libs are really getting desperate - and it's starting to show. Your talk here of McCain being racist, along with ff's ridiculous accusations of Soapweed's post being racist...

http://ranchers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=291671#291671

...are really disgusting. And it's probably being repeated by desperate libs all over the country. But that's okay - you libs just keep right on making sht up.

Middle-of-the-road white voters - some of whom had already decided to vote for Obama, and some who could have been swayed to vote for him - see these charges for what they are. And they're getting sick of them.

So just keep on pointing out how black your candidate is. Keep it up with those unfounded charges of "racism." Keep it up with the lies that most people see through because they know that McCain isn't a racist. Keep on trying to make white Americans feel like racists when they know that they're really not. Just keep it up - and by the time the election gets here, Obama won't carry 10 states.

Gergen's an idiot and he just proved it again. There is no "code" and he doesn't speak for anybody in the south. All he is trying to do by using the word "uppity" is trying to incite blacks. Talk about being racist. :???:

McCain never used the word, but yet it will now be attributed to him. Dems have a habit of choosing elitist snobs for candidates. Kerry was the same way. He was an elitist snob and when it was pointed out, I don't remember anybody using the word "uppity" and trying to paint it as racist. Just one more example of how desperate you libs are.

And by the way Oldtimer, this quote from Paris Hilton's mother (that for some strange reason YOU felt worthy of highlighting and underlining) is a joke:

"It is a complete waste of the money John McCain's contributors have donated to his campaign. It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs. And it is a completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States."

An example of "a complete waste of money" would be the Obama trip that his contributors and the taxpayers had to pay for. A "completely frivolous way to choose the next President of the United States" would be exemplified by the rock star status afforded your boy Obama. THAT is what is frivolous.
