Three Minnesota environmental non-profit advocacy groups have received nearly half a million dollars in out-of-state foundation funding to oppose the Keystone oil pipeline project, according to a Freedom Foundation of Minnesota analysis. The California funding to state groups comes as a surprise, since Keystone's proposed route does not include Minnesota.

The Tides Foundation, based in San Francisco, has distributed nine grants totaling $439,500 to three Minnesota non-profits through 2010, according to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and grant disclosures listed online. No records were immediately available for 2011, when the campaign targeting the pipeline picked up momentum.

The Tides Center's Board Chairman is Wade Rathke, who is also a member of the Tides Foundation Board. Rathke, a protege of the late George A. Wiley, serves as President of the New Orleans-based Local 100 of the Service Employees International Union, and is the founder and chief organizer of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).

"Together they provide tens of millions of dollars annually to some of the most extreme, destructive charities in America," declares the report by Trevor Loudon for the Capital Research Center, a Washington, D.C.-based nonpartisan education and research organization.


ACORN and some of its spinoffs have received from Tides grants totaling nearly $1.2 million while the left-wing "media watchdog" Media Matters has received $500,000.

Another Tides board member, Dan Carol, is a political strategist who co-founded the Apollo Alliance, which helped draft the Obama stimulus package that channels $60 billion into "green/red" causes.
