More problems with the slaughter ban?

Does it strike you as a law that will hold up under judicial review? I mean, I remember some laws being stricken due to the fact they were "vague".. I don't know. I would be interested in reading the Senates version of this bill as well as it is probably different, even if only ever so slightly. Lot of hurdles for them to jump still, hope it fails, leave it up to the states and indivduals.. You don't want to sell your horse than don't....

Don't know if it'll hold up or not...Federal Courts are very funny and sometime lean more toward the whims of the political feelings rather than the Constitution when ruling on/making new law that our forefathers never dreamt of when writing it.... I would hope that much of the law, as to who you can or cannot sell a horse too, would be unconstitutional- but anymore who knows....

If this passes and becomes law- and they delegate horses to be like pets--the next step I see is a push for the licensing of breeders and laws to require all animals sold (except between licensed breeders) to be spayed and/or castrated.....More Californication of the US.....

Several years ago some of the horse publications already had articles about this- and were advising horse people to start looking at the possibility of being government contractors to house unwanted horses, as this was something the PETA type people were going to get pushed thru-- I thought it was so insane at the time to think of the government paying to care for all the unwanted horses in the country, I'd didn't even pay much attention at the time...Guess I should have....

Well the one thing it is not going to do is keep back yard horse breeders from breeding as the fact that we don't slaughter dogs hasn't stopped a huge explosion in populations of those critters...I just don't get it.. To me the slaughter situation, while not ideal, was working. 92,000 horses that were once processed are going to have what done to them now? Shot in the head? I doubt it. Put down by vets? Again, highly doubt it.

The ability to do it yourself, if these animals are going to be classified soley as pets will probably be endangered as well in certain areas... With gun laws strengthening in some states/municiple areas to the oiunt where it is either illegal to own one or discharge on within X amount of yards of someone elses property/home.. I just don't know but I think this is ill concieved.

AUDIO: Grassley on horse slaughter bill (1:00 MP3)

Iowa Senator Charles Grassley says the House-passed ban on horse slaughter is not likely to be addressed in the Senate this month. Grassley says that there is not necessarily a majority of senators against the bill, but not only does he cite the Senate calendar being full between now and adjournment, he says there are probably enough lawmakers opposed to the bill to create a filibuster.

“So even though it’s very evenly divided on whether or not the bill should pass, there’s a significant minority that’s going to keep it from even being brought to a final vote,” Grassley told reporters.

Additionally, Grassley quotes colleagues who maintain there are more pressing issues that need to be addressed.

The measure that would outlaw the processing of horses for human consumption was approved by the House despite opposition from agriculture groups.
