Minn. firm recalls ground beef

May 12, 2007, 0:08 GMT

WINDOM, MN, United States (UPI) -- A Minnesota meat packer is recalling 117,500 pounds of beef trim products shipped to customers in eight states because of possible E. coli contamination.

Two children and five adults contracted E. coli after eating ground beef bought from one of four Lunds or Byerly`s grocery stores in the Twin Cities since April 12, the Minnesota Health Department said Thursday.

The health department said ground beef that was purchased after April 7 from a Lunds or Byerly`s store should be discarded or returned to the store because it may be tainted with E. coli 0157:H7.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says PM Holdings, a meat packer in Windom, Minn., is voluntarily recalling beef trim products produced on March 27 and shipped to distributors and retail outlets in Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Because these products later became ground beef sold under many different retail brand names, consumers should check with their local retailer to determine whether they may have purchased any of the products subject to recall, the USDA said in a release.

Kalamazoo company recalls 129,000 pounds of beef

Updated: May 11, 2007 11:23 PM EDT

KALAMAZOO -- Davis Creek Meats and Seafood in Kalamazoo is voluntarily recalling approximately 129,000 pounds of beef products due to the possible contamination of E. coli.

The problem was discovered after two people in the Kalamazoo area became sickened with symptoms related to the bacteria.

The beef products were produced between March 1 and April 30, and were shipped to food service distribution centers and marketplace stores in Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The affected meat includes boxes of mechanically tenderized steaks and ground beef of varying weights.

Labels on the boxes bear the establishment number "Est. 1974A" inside the USDA mark of inspection and a date code (on the top right corner of the label) between "060" and "120." Only products with those date codes are subject to recall. Each box also bears a net weight declaration and the message "Manufactured for Gordon Food Service" or "Distributed by Gordon Food Service."

24 Hour News 8 talked to Dr. Richard Tooker, the medical director of the Kalamazoo County Health Department. He said these cases are a different source of contamination, compared to a recall announced Friday. That recall involved thousands of pounds of beef trim products from a company in Minnesota.

Symptoms related to the bacteria can range from -

Mild gastrointestinal illness
Mild upset stomach
Severe diarrhea, possibly bloody
Possible infection of the bloodstream
People who are very young, very old, medically fragile, or those with poor immune systems can really get sick from this illness, Dr. Tooker adds.

He says if you are going to cook ground beef, you need to cook it thoroughly, to 160 degrees Fahrenheit and use a meat thermometer.
