there's a vacant factory in California (solyndra) that could be retro-fitted.

With the approval of the Obama administration, an electric car company that received a $529 million federal government loan guarantee is assembling its first line of cars in Finland, saying it could not find a facility in the United States capable of doing the work.

Vice President Joseph Biden heralded the Energy Department's $529 million loan to the start-up electric car company called Fisker as a bright new path to thousands of American manufacturing jobs. But two years after the loan was announced, the job of assembling the flashy electric Fisker Karma sports car has been outsourced to Finland.

"There was no contract manufacturer in the U.S. that could actually produce our vehicle," the car company's founder and namesake told ABC News. "They don't exist here."

there seems to be a few payoffs in this deal.. and not the ones everyone else is complaining about..

if they build a plant it will be in Delaware.. isn't Biden from Delaware?

Government-Backed Competition

Fisker received approval for a $528.7 million government loan to develop its two plug-in cars, with the majority of the funds supporting production of the future less expensive plug-in hybrid. General Motors will also receive government backing, more than $240 million in grants—rather than loans—including $106 million for its planned battery pack assembly factory in Brownstown Township. The company will also receive grants of $30.5 million to demonstrate as many as 5,000 Chevrolet Volt cars with electric utilities and a limited number of consumers, and $105 million for electric for electric drive component-manufacturing facilities. These grants are in addition to $30 billion supplied by the federal government to restore the company from bankruptcy.

ice President Joe Biden will announce tomorrow that Fisker Automotive will build plug-in hybrid cars at a Delaware plant formerly run by General Motors. The use of the GM plant by Fisker, an unproven California-based start-up, is an ironic symbol of the new era of competition for next-generation green cars—pitting small innovative companies against the world's largest carmakers.

General Motors laid off more than 450 workers when it closed its Boxwood Road manufacturing plant in summer 2009. Fisker Automotive plans to use the facility to make plug-in hybrids, employing about 1,500 people.

Fisker says it will begin production on its vehicles by late 2012; Project NINA will eventually create or support 2,000 factory jobs as well as 3,000 vendor and supplier jobs. By 2014, it expects production to enter full swing, turning out 75,000-100,000 vehicles per year. It expects to export more than half of these vehicles, which would be the largest export percentage of any domestic automaker.

The automaker will spend $175 million to retool the GM plant with the funding coming from the $528.7 million Department of Energy loan awarded to Fisker in September. Fisker currently only offers its electric sports car, the Karma.

The closure of the Wilmington plant, for the time being, marks the end of large-scale automotive production in the Northeastern United States

oh nothing to see here, just another deal to buy union votes?

that and another loan that is not going to get repaid..

Got to love it when Obama tours the US selling the idea of MADE IN AMERICA on a Canadian made bus and while financing a Finland made car with Chinese borrowed money. If it was so sad it would be funny.

But what do you expect from a guy that has a Jobs committee Chairman that out sources jobs to China and hides profits in foreign banks as not to pay ANY US taxes while he collects US tax payer stimulas dollars for his company. :?
