The fat fall cows have had their babies, and this morning I was out feeding them their morning brunch.

Really nice pictures, Jassy. Thanks for sharing.

Now I have one little question.
Why are you caking them when the grass looks that good and
is so green?

Great pics Jassy. All look good. in the one picture I notice that about half way to the horizon the hills turn brown, is there a fence dividin there and this pasture? I was just wonderin why that part looks like it does when the cows are on green stuff.

Thanks.....Let's see question 1...why we cake now...Actually we onlycake them every other day...yes the grass "looks" good, but it's not the best pasture we have..so they get a little extra cake. Question 2...Lilly I looked back and saw what you meant by the hills being more brown colored...they are in a different pasture...and my guess it was the suns lighting that morning that made em look different. Question 3...Winter program is simple...cake, grass till it gets colder, then hay, plus salt and mineral...nothin fancy. Thanks again for taking the time to look...

Mirror image to us, Jassy. Since we are totally fall calvers, that is what we do for our cows :D Nice to visit with someone who manage their cattle like us :D

We calve the large herd in the spring. However a couple years back my Dad got the idea to buy some red angus cows out of Colorado and start a fall calving herd. His idea was to generate income twice a year. He since has added to the herd and it now also has some black cows and some bwf's. Our spring herd is caked and given hay salt and mineral. However the fall herd just has to make it on their own. They do get salt and mineral and some hay when they are in the calving lot but that is it.

I think that we are lucky to live in the sandhills where the grass is pretty hardy...so that the fall cows can pretty much survive on grazing..course in dry years..they do need a little extra. Our spring herd gets much more attention..and it shows...they are so much more quiet as a herd than the open range fall cows...especially during calving.!
