National Cattlemen's Beef Association … so far has given more than four times as much to Democrats…

Democrats in Congress See Ag Contributions Grow

Mid-South Farmer

April 20, 2007

Since 1994, agricultural political action committees have been giving Republicans about twice as much money as Democrats. But in the first quarter of 2007, agriculture PACs have given Democrats $599,990 compared to $474,274 for Republicans.

"I don't think there's anything surprising about the current numbers," says Charlie Stenholm, who was a Democratic Representative from Texas and ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee when the 2002 Farm Bill was written, in an article in The Hill.

Although the numbers so far this year are only initial contributions, they still suggest a significant break from past trends. In the 2005-06 cycle, Democrats received $6 million and Republicans received $12 million, according to filings compiled by PoliticalMoneyline.com.

Stenholm says that now that Democrats have the majority in both the House and Senate, special interests are likely to continue to shift their attention - and money - in their direction. "If you want to have access, that’s what you have to do," Stenholm says.

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association gave more than twice as much to Republicans as to Democrats last year, but so far has given more than four times as much to Democrats. Dairy PACs also gave over twice as much to Republicans last year, and now have given close to twice as much to Democrats. And although tobacco PACs still give more to Republicans - $143,000 to $107,500 so far - it's a much smaller margin than last year, when they gave Republicans more than three times as much.

You guys enjoy your slimy political games and innuendoes way too much!

Obviously, you don't want to admit it, but NCBA has not been a one party organization. They obviously work for and with candidates whom they believe will benefit the cattleman. Sometimes they support the wrong ones. I very seriously doubt Hillary has received our PAC money.

NCBA PAC, which is a separate organization from the Policy/Dues division, contributes to those candidates who believed to be 'trainable', or who have good viewpoints on agriculture, OR who are willing to listen. S

Con-man, you fail either to understand, or to admit, that some lobbyists use their knowledge of an industry (cattle production in this instance) to attempt to show Congress people the value, or harm, proposed legislation and/or regulation will do to an industry. It is NOT just about power. There are some legislators who trust specific organizations and the people represented or employed by that organization based solely on previous performance and experience. That is, so you don't misunderstand, An organization such as NCBA, which has scrupulously adhered to honesty and accuracy in dealing with Congressmen and bureucrats and agencies, is highly respected among Congressmen for just that reason, along with what really amounts to a pittance of financial support compared with amounts other industries have available for campaign donations.

OT, it is sad to hear you are in the prostitution business.

And I'm happy to tell you that NCBA PAC donates my money to the candidates I tell them to support with it.

Uh, MJR, let me remind you what you've said about Democrats in the past;

"Obviously, Bush haters, Liberals, Democrats and demogogues would not agree."

"Surely, the Democrats like Ms. DeLauro wouldn't play politics with our food, would they????? "

"How much of your claims of "power abuse" by the Bush admin/Karl Rove has been substantiated, and how much is political rhetoric by the Democrats who, after all, perfected that slimy art over the past 60 years of them being in power and using the power with a heavy hand more often than not."

"Is it really any surprise that Democrats are using their ill-gained new political power (too many voters choose candidates they believe will bring home the most 'pork') to go after Republicans on even the flimsiest of excuses"

You've made other comments about Democrats (need I bring up any of SH's   ), ALL of them derogatory and now you're defending NCBA donating to them! And just the other day you asked me how all the NCBA members would allow NCBA to do anything out of line?

Just curious; Which ones of those Democrats with the ill-gained heavy-handed slimy power did you tell the NCBA to donate to?

Sandhusker, that I see many liberal Dems in power today who do abuse power......like Harry Reid and others who daily say things the terrorist groups surely must love.....not to mention Harry's problems with land deals, nor the guy with the freezer full of money....and I could mention even more, does not mean I believe all Democrats are of the same ilk.

I've supported and voted for many over the nearly 50 years I've been a voter. The Democrat liberal side has pretty squeezed out the conservative minded Democrats, IMO. I would be quite likely to vote for a Joe Leiberman (sp?), if there wasn't a more conservative candidate for an office.

Sorry that I can't find words of one syllable so you can understand, Sandhusker, but I said NCBA PAC donates MY money to the candidates I want supported.

I did NOT say NCBA PAC donates ALL the money to candidates I support.

MRJ, where does most of that PAC money come from? Does it come from producers or packers?

If I remember right, it was my neighbor, back when he was NCBA President that presented President GW with a nice white Stetson at an NCBA convention...I've been hoping to run into him to find out if NCBA truly thinks they can find one big enough to fit ol Hillary
