mule footed hogs

Visited with some good ol' backwood boys here this morning. They're whiskey makers by trade but they do a little hog hunting, trapping and trading on the side. Anyway one of them traded a squirrel dog (supposedly) for a wild hog off of his neighbor. He said the neighbor had trapped some mule footed hogs. I'd never heard of one. I know that mule foot can be found in the red Holstein and I've heard it used to be found in Herefords occasionally but I didn't know it ran in hogs. I'm not sure these boys are believable, one of them also told me that it iced so hard at his place yesterday that he saw a little doe deer that had so much ice on her tail it looked like a coyotes. All the ice has been north of us (and them). They're dandies.

Trading for whiskey or mule footed hogs, RR? Mule foot has also been noted in the Black Angus breed too. Hard telling what inbreeding in the feral hog population has done. Maybe they ended up with a hog version of fetal alcohol syndrome.

There is a reason they call your state the "Razorback State"

Cheers---

Mule Footed Pig

The Mule-Footed Pig has a fused solid hoof instead of the split hoof. This type of foot is thought to be congenital defect in most other breeds of pigs. Color varies as does size although they tend to be a large pig. There are no standard for the Mule Footed pig at this time. There are several European breeds that have the single fused hoof. In Europe they are called "Single-Hoofed Hogs."

Spent an evening with some of your local "backwoods" boys & girls down around Alma (south of you) a few years back. They were on the river bank just off Hwy. 71, just standing around a fire in a drum and I stopped and got out to join them.

Had some of the local corn squeezins that night and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Around 9 or 10 that night when the squeezins ran out, one asked if he could borrow my cell phone. I handed it to him and he made a call.

Bout 30-45 minutes later a sheriff's deputy car pulled up on the dirt road.

The guy who made the call walked to that car and brought back another quart of that tasty stuff. Said the deputy was his "cousin" and sold those spirits as a part time job.

I don't doubt your story one bit but anything that happened 30 or 40 minutes after the first sip needs to be verified by another source. Anything that tastes like water and burns your gut like acid is bound to effect your memory.

Things just tend to be "Embellished" more picturesque-ly.

By the way. Those boys were about 18-20 years of age, and their dates were about 12-13 and very quiet unless spoken to.

Those were just the hand-maids for the real women which I am sure kept out if sight, knowing they were in the company of rough men from the country of Alabama.

Back to the mule foot. One of these fellas said that they used to be more common. He said they had some when he was a kid and that his grandad was a religious man that would eat a regular hog but wouldn't eat a mule footed hog because it wasn't cloven hoofed. I guess the lack of cud chewing didn't bother him none.
