Wow yesterday was 21 days calving and I calved out 84% of the cow herd….. but then last fall being short of hay we cut 10 days off the end off the 60 days when we preg checked then cull real heavy sell ¼ the herd, because we were way short on hay.
My ten year average is 68% in the first 21 days of calving. Last year was the worst at 57% of the cow herd.

Congrats! I was at 80% in the first 21 days this year. This drought is awful, but I feel I've got a much better herd because of it.

Last year I tightened my breeding to 55 days, and am so excited not to be calving into May this spring. Those later calves never fit with anything, and ended up going to the sale barn.

If I had more than one and a part load of steers, and one part load of heifers to sell, it would be different (two loads). However, when you're trying to market uniform truckloads with small numbers, I think it pays to tighten the herd to make it work. It also pays when you're mostly by yourself and don't have the energy to calve for much longer :D

those days of nights of heavy snow storms and you have every nook and cranny stuffed with new borns, I think if they just keep comeing at this rate I'll be done soon.

Too many to take care of by myself (with family) and not enough to pay the bills
