Three of my bulls.

This is a pretty good bull for being out of a first calf heifer.

This bull proves there is no pampering on this ranch. Born outside at 0 farenheight. He stayed outside.

Now history and a question. Many have stated that they wished their Dad would have went to angus quicker. My Dad bought 2 angus bulls in 1955 to put with his herefords. 2 more in 1956. For over 40 years his primary source of income was from baldie cattle. His first couple sales they sold at a discount from herefords. But he had things in place when the market came, only a couple years early. So if the market changes from straight black, who will change with it and who will repeat what their Dad did in reverse?

Nice Hereford bulls, with pigment in the proper places.

In answer to your question, dollars speak pretty loudly. Extra inconvenient work does, too. If the extra dollars outweigh any inconvenience, I will follow the dollar. If they don't, I won't. As far as buying a Hereford bull to put with Angus cows, it could be a possibility in the future. That is why I like your properly placed pigment. Without it, for my operation, I wouldn't even consider buying a Hereford bull.

Nice bulls. As you know from my pictures we are going to do some cross breeding here this year. We now have 3 young hereford bulls and Buford (I'm the Mom I win). I think it will be interesting to see the difference in our program when the cross bred calves that are kept for heifers are at the breeding and calving stage.

Real nice Hereford bulls.

All I have to say is put them in the chute and knock the tips of the horns off with a sazz-all to point them back towards the nose.

Other than that they look like good ole, long, Hereford bulls!!

Nice bulls! Good length, toplines look good and beautiful rear quarters. We have used Hereford bulls in the past and will again. We try to get pigment around the eyes as it seems to help with pinkeye issues and all the dust we have out here. I like the bulls shoulders too. Nice and smooth and not coarse.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I tried to get this picture up last night but I was tired and quit fighting my computer. This is the sire of the first 2 bulls. I think I am just now finding out how good. The first 2 years he was with heifers and a few just kind of average type cows. Last year I finally put 20 good cows with him and only a few of the heifers due to him having daughters in the replacement pen.
Pigment wise, I don't select strictly for pigment but I have never used a bull with a white bag and never will. All the bulls I have used have had at least a little pigment around one eye(both is better) but I have a new bull that is barely on the eye pigment. He was just too good to overlook because of color!
Soapweed, look for me in Valentine next year for the Bull Bash. I might just embarrass myself with April calves that haven't been pushed to 4.5 pounds gain per day(3.25 is enough) but I am going to try to get there anyway.

Nice young bulls, Doug. My favorite kind! But, ............. maybe I'm a little too picky because to me, I think the front hooves are a little too long on the bull in the second picture.

Whereabouts are you in South Dakota

I am 80 miles east of Rapid City.

I saw that last night when I went to post the pictures. I was positive he was OK but first thing this morning I went out to look. 6 inches of mud from the rain we had made it a little hard to tell but I am almost sure it was just the angle of the way he was standing. The old bull I posted is his sire and his feet are as good as a 4yr old as any yearling so I am pretty confident on his soundness. Also, if you ever don't like a bull you buy from me I will make it right, it doesn't matter if it is 2-3 years later.

Nice bulls. I'd agree that in these photos there looks like there could be some feet issues, but I also know how pictures don't always reflect the true individual. I'd also tip or weight the horns...but that is my "old" Hereford upbringing too. I personally like to see the big curved horns of the old Hereford bulls...they look like kings!

If you're that far west of RC, you darn near aren't in SD!

Yep, IMO those are good looking bulls, in the correct colors!

TTB, I think Doug must have been turned around from the recent snowstorm when he posted his location. I'd say he is 80 miles EAST of Rapid City! I'm 70 miles east of Sturgis so Doug must be roughly straight south of me as the crow flies.

I must be a dislexic typer! I tried to type RC is 80 miles west of me.

The horns are already weighted(except for one who injured his horn and had it tipped) It doesn't show much in the pictures because of the side view but they will come down. I am on the fence about what is better.
A couple more pictures. These were also posted last spring.

This calf has grown up and sells also. My advertising budget was limited so we took pictures of the best bull(Y7023) and a heifer bull(B7011) and then a couple other bulls because we could only use pictures of 3. His pictures didn't turn out the best so he isn't on the flyer.

This cow just had a 79lb calf out of the JC bull!!! :D :D

Well, I kinda thought he was from east from RC rather than west, but who am I to question where a guy hangs his sombrero

Have you gotten any moisture, John?

Cheers---

Nice looking bulls. My dad would be SO happy that Herefords are making a come back, especially in this area.

We are pretty short on the moisture, YTD. I did empty .65 about 6:30 this morning which has accumulated since at least two weeks ago. Probably had a quarter " or so more since then.

People south, north, and west have had considerably more this spring, according to friends in those directions.

Just had a friend call needing phone numbers to deal with hydro-plainng off I-90 with a load of horses. She should come out fine now that she has the numbers she needed, and thanks to a Good Samaritan on the road who loaned her a cell phone. Hope everyone stays safe out in this weather.

Doug, I'm 13 miles west of Howes and I dumped .80 out of the rain guage, I think I had dumped .40 before from the Sunday deal. Sunday snow is mostly melted except the larger drifts.

TTB, it's hard to tell but most people say the snow was between 6-12 inches altogether. I like to call it 5 buckle overshoe deep. Today there is a spit of rain now and then but the current winter storm hasn't materialized here... yet.

OK, so I had to go look on a map and Doug is a bit SE instead of straight south! :p

I'm glad I'm not calving yet. Neighbor got laid up with an emergency appendix operation early Monday. Now is home but not supposed to do anything or lift more than 10 lbs.

He just started lambing so I'll get to sharpen my sheepherder skills. I'm a little rusty on the lambing deal!  One of his brothers came out from town to stay and help so I will try to help the help.
